Wordline programming shoe- phantom power?

Post by EEnerd »

I picked up two programming "shoes" that are supposed to plug into the Motorola Universal Programmer. I don't have the universal programmer, but I have a TTL level shifter I built a long time ago and it works great. I bought the 'shoes' so that I don't have to try to use mini popper grabber clips to try to connect my circuit to a pager to program it.

Both shoes originally connected to the UPA via 4-pin modular jacks that look to me like they'll take a standard telephone modular plug.

One shoe is for the Bravo Classic. It has 3 contacts for programming and a long post the size of a AA battery with a metal tip. Obviously this provides the 1.5VDC to the pager being programmed (and the return is through the ground pin in the 3 pin section). I easily found out which pins on the Modular jack go to which programming contacts and the DC supply contact.

The other shoe is for a a Wordline pager. It has only the standard 3 programming contacts, and not only that, but the design of it is such that the body of it takes up the area in the pager where the battery WOULD go. So my question is; am I supposed to power the pager through alligator clips on the battery spring terminals, or is there some way Motorola would power the Wordlines through it's programming pins somehow??

Thanks a million for any light you can shed on this mystery for me.
