Check for added jumper on the control head interface board, or on the back side of the Command board. Jumper is from fused A+ to Switched A+. This was done to some Spectras so they were ON all the time, or used with a battery disconnect switch so the Spectra comes on with application of battery.

Where is this jumper located on the interface board?

Spectra A5 Head Modification

Post by txshooter »

A modification to the Spectra A5 head was made to ensure the radio had contiuous power and could not be powered down from the head by the end user. This modification was done priomarily to AVL radios and most of these on the surplus market cam from the Houston Fire Department in all but new condition. I personally had a ton of these at one time.

Here are a few pictures to help out on this modification. It is very simple and easy to do.

These pictures were taken by another, but I have robbed them for the purpose of showing the modification you need to do to fix this problem.

#1 View of the head and position of the Mod.

#2 Closeup of the wire that needs to be removed or cut.

#3 Closeup of the wire than needs to be removed or cut with the frame removed.

#4 Closeup after the wire has been cut.

#5 What this should look like when you are done.

This same question has been asked a ton of times, but don't think anyone has included Photo's to show the simple modification needed. It May be helpful if this is included in the new knowledge base.

Recheck for added jumper on the control head interface board. It could be a small 000 resistor or a wire jumper.

Or try a different known good control head interface board ( the one that connects the command board to the control head).
