I am thinking of buying a MTS2000 from the US it is a 48 mode flashport type top display
So I dont muck people round and buy something I cant use can someone tell me if these radios can be upgraded to 160 mode

why don't you just buy the 160ch version and you'll also get the bigger front display?

Any Jedi can be 'upgraded' if you are willing to spend the $$$ for the parts, but the basic model with 48 channels can not be changed to a 160 mode with the top display, and you'll need the front display/keypad assy. to accomplish this task.
If you want to play with your 48 mode radio, check the firmware version first to find out if you can play with lab.
If over R05.42, then forget it, unless you are proficient with reviving toolproofed radios, otherwise, if your firmware version is lower than R05.42, have fun and lab away...you'll find a wealth of lab supported features but be careful on where you tread.
Should you choose to 'adjust' specific items in the many menu areas, write ALL the information down as it was originally, or you will have problems if you change the data and screw something up.
Save the original codeplug so you have a working backup in case you have to call NO JOY!
Just a word of warning; do NOT change the VCO crossovers on RX or TX...they should never require changing UNLESS you are installing an updated RF board and the manual calls for changing this field, otherwise, leave it alone.......it's LEAVERITE....leaverite where you found it.

I will just have to keep looking and hope that someone on the Batboard doesnt find distance a problem when selling a 403-470mhz MTS 2000 which is 160 mode
