P1225 Tx Issue

Post by Vercomm »

Hey Guys,

I have a VHF P1225 that it a bit starnge in the Tx. When I connect the radio to the service monitor using the correct adaptor it says it's only txing about .8watts. But I can activate a repeater about 15 miles away. Any ideas about what's going on?

I verified my cables, monitor , and adaptor on a second p1225 which put out 4.7watts.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jamie

What radios do you own?: M1225, HT100, P1225, etc

Hitting a repeater 15 miles away on .8 watts isn't unusual.
In God we trust. Everyone else, we run through NCIC, Thinkstream, and III.

By some chance, is the ground ring around the antenna jack missing or not making connection inside the radio? The ring is used for the adapter ground but the antenna doesn't care about it.

I will check that out, so if I understand correctly, the part the antenna screws into is the actual antenna port, and the piece that is inside that, which the tit on the adaptor touches, is the grounding ring?

If that's not the problem, any other places or things to check out?

The center contact of the adapter is the rf "hot", but the outside makes contact with a shiny metal ring that completely circles around the antenna jack on the top of radio housing. On the inside, this makes contact with chassis ground when the radio is inserted and that is the test jack/cable shield.

So, when just the antenna is on the radio should the RF hot (which I understand is surrounded by the shiny metal ring that completely circles around the antenna jack on the top of radio housing.) make contact with the metal ring that circles around the antenna jack? I would think no, but if the antenna doesn't touch the RF hot and only screws in to the shiny metal ring, how does the antenna work?

I'm used of the Jedi series where the antenna's have two contacts.

No, there is no contact between the antenna and the ring. It is only used with the 50 ohm test adapter. The ring brings the ground out to connect to your test cable. Since the antenna doesn't use it, the radio would work fine with the antenna but a test cable would look like you had problems if that ring is missing or not grounded inside. It sounds like you have the ring on your radio so easiest check is to remove the battery and check from chassis to the ring with an ohm meter.
