D44 Spectra problem

Bought a D44 spectra that needed an MLM board. I had a spare MLM that I installed in the radio, changed the serial numbers, etc. Radio functions w/o fail codes, however pressing the buttons on the A5 control head cause the radio to power down, then power on again. It only does it while pressing the control buttons above the display and the three buttons on the right. The mode, volume, dim and home keys function properly. I've looked at the MLM and command board locations in the bit banger and they match up as an A5 head. Also, the power button seems to work off and on. Is this a bad head, or more likely, something associated with changing the MLM without knowing what I'm doing? Thanks.

I think the real question here is what did this radio start out life as.

I have seen bad programming (internal mlm issues) cause strange things to happen on a control head. Even when the bits were set correctly, the radio didn't know how to behave properly.

It's hard to believe, (but since this is a Spectra, anything is possible) that you have a bad control head. It sounds as if the head is sending proper data to the command board unless you have some wild SP version of head that don't sproken de language. If that's the case, you need a new head. (This didn't come from the border patrol, did it?)

I suggest obtaining a proper code plug image from a known good radio and overwriting what you have. Changes are that will straighten it out.

Have you tried going into the control section of the RSS and
looking to see what the head thinks those buttons should be?

It might be something as simple as the buttons are not set up
correctly and need to be reprogrammed.

I've tried going in to RSS to see what the control buttons function as and they are all set up correctly. I'll try writing another codeplug to the radio and see what happens. Have no idea where this radio originated, just thought I'd tinker with it since I had a spare MLM to see if I could get to breath again. From the looks of it, the covers must have been off for a while because the boards are dirty. Most times I pull the covers and the boards are clean. This one is the exception. It might be that simple. The pins may be dirty and need cleaning. Thanks for the help.

What model# interconnect board are you using? If it's not a HLN6285, follow the mod on Batlabs to change it over.

Using the HLN6285 board and still has same problem but has now added a Fail 001 synthesizer out of lock condition!!! Me thinks it is time to make a door stop or scrap for parts. Oh well, it was fun to tinker with it. Thanks for all the help.

Trade for ????. Do you have a brick that you just can't live without? I'd be happy to send it to you without my spare MLM. It has everything else. This is the worst Spectra that I have received to date. Covers had to be off for a while. I would not ask anyone to pay money for it. Bought it just to tinker with but I'm out of answers. Let me know if you want it. I can send it to you for just shipping charges. Guessing around $8-10 for USPS Priority mail.

Before you give up, if you have not already sent the radio off to Will, try doing a reset of the microprocessor. As if you were replacing the command board.

That should fix the problem.

How do you, or what is involved in resetting the microprocessor?? Sounds like this may be of good use.
