Voltmeter need help !

Post by firebug24 »

Hello
Im looking for some info and recommentations are Voltmeters.

Motorola Minitor II service manual advises to use a HP 400FL meter
but like to know whats best for the money and still work on pagers.

thanks
steve :o

****P.S. manual also advises to use a Tektronix Oscilloscope model #
2213A . Are there better ones that will work ?

Go to Home Depot and buy one of their digital meters. You
should be able to get a good one for under $80. They have
them in the electrical section.

The HP400FL was recommended because it is an AC voltmeter which will filter out the stray RF at the metering point on the pagers without loading down the audio circuits.

You can get an HP400 on eBay for not too much money. Digital meters are fine for most things but basically useless for peaking stages, unless you are gifted at watching rapidly changing numeric displays.

The scope will do the same thing but costs more. I would think any decent bench scope would work. The Tek 2200 series scopes are falling in price quite a bit lately...I bought an as-new 2235 for $ 50 at a swap meet recently and it works as good as it looks. The probes are getting almost as expensive as the scopes these days, and they always seem to be separate from the scopes...

The two AC voltmeters that we relied on at the test equipment depot were the old Motorola S1053? (not sure of the model #) and the 400FL. Unfortunately both of these meters have the same problem. Old technology, so replacement parts are hard to find. I don't know of anyone that makes a comparable replacement. I would recommend a good analog (preferably) o'scope instead.

I almost wonder if a Simpson 260xi would do the trick? Used ones fetch under $ 100 at a hamfest, although I'm not sure how immune they are to stray RF.
