GP580 Smartnet/Smartzone?

Post by NSPD »

I know this radio is in the European Catalogs, but has anyone actually ever seen one of these Smartnet/Smartzone Waris Portables? Being a Waris I assume there is no transmit inhibit feature. Just wondering...

I've seen the ATS2500, if that helps.

It has most of the features you'd find in an MTS2000. OmniLink, conventional voting scan etc, but no secure support of course.

The ATS2500 looks to be just like the GP580. So, any input on these things? I'd like to have one if it's possible to disable the transmit on it either with a software mod or an easy hardware mod.

You can't disable transmit on SmartZone systems with these. No idea about SmartNet.

If you want to get crafty, get yourself a service monitor (or something capable of measuring VERY small RF output), tune the TX output down to as close as zero as you can get then bridge the PA input with a resister or just leave it disconnected.

I've done this on a few radios and it works just fine.

And no, the radio won't complain, it'll still receive just fine.

Cheaper and easier to buy a scanner. ATS2000/GP580 = around $1300 USD, and your chance of finding one on the used market is close enough to 0.

(System key issues aside. That horse was beaten to death years ago.)

There's a shop not too far from Toronto that had 2 of them last year. They sold for $150 because nobody knew what they were.

Good luck with the software however.
