radio programming question

Post by remote_medic »

I am trying to program my radio and I have a question. I'm a volunteer FF and my chief gave me a frequency list so I could program them into my Kenwood TM-271A (with the mod)

There is a "rxpl" and a "txpl" listed for some channels on the list. Some are listed as CS (carrier squelch) which I understand to mean no tone. What I am trying to figure out is should I program these as a CTCSS or as a simple tone. I dont' know enough about it to know the difference. I also can't seem to program the tone to be specific to rx or tx...I can't seem to set 2 tones

Example:
Ch1 - Fire Zone 1, Tx-158.775, Rx - 155.985, RxPL - 118.8, TxPL - 127.3

If I didn't explain this well enough, please let me know and I'll try to explain it better.

Thanks
Chris

What radios do you own?: Astro Saber, XTS', APX's

Most likely because that radio wasnt meant for the application you are trying to use it!

Well at least I wasn't the first to post it.. I refrained.

I don't know much about Ham Radios but you may not be able to set up a separate tone for TX and RX. CTCSS and PL are the same. CTCSS means Continous Tone Coded Squelch Setting, and is just a fancy way of talking about a PL tone. For example, in most cases "CTCSS 1" is PL 67.0 Hz.
