I work for a large company that uses HT1250's extensively. Unfortunately, there are not that many true experts on Motorolas here. We can program them with our in house codeplugs, but that is about it.
My problem is how do you know what to set the different dropdowns to in the "Conventional Personalities" when adding a channel? Our freqs are set by company standard, but how do the rest of the options interrelate??
Thanks

Re: Programming Questions
I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but when you add a channel, you do it under "conventional personality", then you assign each personality to a zone. You put in each personality your transmit and receive information for whatever you are using. If you elaborate on what you are asking, I may be able to give you a better answer.

I'm not trying to insult you, but if you don't know what most of those setting means and using the help screen does not clear it up, you probably have no business programming your own radios, thats what radio techs are for. If you have a specific question ask away and I will be glad to try and explain it to you, but the pro series portables are not meant to be programmed by the inexperienced.

Re: Programming Questions
I am not trying to insult you either, BUT if you had read the original post, I was looking for help on learning the interrelationships between the different options when setting up a 'Conventional Personality'. I was interested in what the different TPL Freq Codes meant and when to use specific ones. However, i have sense been able to find the answers to my questions.Batwings21 wrote:I'm not trying to insult you, but if you don't know what most of those setting means and using the help screen does not clear it up, you probably have no business programming your own radios, thats what radio techs are for. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Programming Questions
I understood what you meant, It just seemed that you did not understand basic radio features, such as tpl/dpl ; if you are and end user, you shouldn't have to. And as far as I know there is no radio 101 primer for people who wish to learn. I know Motorola offers a class that is basically that, that would explain a lot and make it easier to use the software. I was just stating that if you don't have the basic knowledge yet you should read up on it before attempting to do your own programming, especially the pro series radios. I have nothing against those who wish to learn, but I don't know that you will find the right information here without knowing the basics first. I wish I knew of a place other than motorola to direct you to, but I don't. Looks like you have found at least some of your answers. Maybe someone else here can provide a link to a website or something that can explain all the common terms and what they do, that will tell you when you need to use different pl tones and etc.
Re: Programming Questions
Actually, if you want to learn more about how the radio works - your best bet is to pick up one of the ham radio books, and just read the book for the technician test. You don't even need to take the test - but the book explains a lot of the different systems, PL, DPL, frequency, etc.
It's not a bad jumping off point by any means.
The problem with adding or changing channels is that if you know nothing about the configuration of the system, you could risk getting in hot water in one way or another. You can't just choose another channel, put it in and talk (well, you can, but then you may interfere with other users, etc.
If you have a specific question as to how one field relates to another, plenty of people here can point you in the right direction. Ask specifics. If your looking for a general how to, the provided tutorials and help with the software spell it out pretty well, providing you have a basic knowledge / understanding of communications/radios.

Re: Programming Questions
Thank you for your help. I finally got my hands on "Ham Radios for Dummies" and I now have the Motorola training on software. These resources and talking with other Hams have been very instructional. My background is computers and I was thrown into a job as a Radio Tech due to staffing requirements. So I thought I might as well learn what I could.
Thanks again for the help.
