XTL mobile deviation limit question

Post by Jim202 »

Has anyone else seen the radio deviation limited to less than the usual 4.5 to 4.8 KHz on a 5 KHz channel?

I have a brand new VHF XTL mobile that with the hand mic it only goes to 4.0 KHz. If I set the
channel to a 4 KHz channel, then the deviation maxes out at 3.0 KHz.

If you go into the tune software, it says to set the deviation at 2.7 to 2.8 KHz in the test. That
is where this radio is set.

Have talked with another agency that seem to have the same issue. Trying to figure if this is
what Motorola is shipping these days and why it is a little low.

Is there a different set point on the tune software to set the deviation limit a little higher? Haven't
tried shifting this set point up just a little yet.

Using the accsessory connector on the back of the radio with another audio source, I see the same
issue of low limited deviation.

Haven't run into that problem yet with the XTL series but I will keep it in mind. You could also play with the mic gain setting in the CPS which might help. The only difference I've noticed with this series and XTS is that the transmit DPL, PL is the same level on a 25khz channel or a 12.5khz channel, which is around 750-800hz, which is way too high for a narrowband channel. Service monitor calibrated?
