MCS2000 Headscratcher...

Post by tomsdad »

Purchased a used MCS2000, sat down to pull the codeplug out and take a look, fired up CPS R01.10.00 - it seemed to talk with the radio for a while, then fell over with a "Communication Failed" error.

Ah, thought I - I wonder if I need to read it with RSS then convert the codeplug to CPS?

Found RSS 05.07.00 and booted to DOS and fired it up - it happily read the codeplug then gave me "codeplug too new for this application" message!

Not having played a lot with the MCS family I've exhausted my knowledge, is it possible the radio was programmed with a version of RSS great than mine, but is not able to be read by CPS, and if so, what can I do about it?

Any advice appreciated!

Steve

What radios do you own?: HT1550's, X9000's, CDM1550's

if it's been read with cps then no rss will work. if it starts reading then gives you that message then start checking the obvious like the battery in the rib or that the cables are not cut or shorting out.

Thanks for that, I did put a fresh battery in (first thing I did when CPS failed), still resulted in the "failed communication" message.

Using the same laptop, rib and cables with RSS, well like I said, the radio is read but the codeplug is too new.

How high did the RSS versions run to?

current version CPS is 02.00.02 or something like that, which is a fairly new (spring '07 ish) release.

what is the exact model number and flash? if you can find a codeplug that you can open that matches yours then you should be able to write it to your radio

Interesting, I tried to put the radio into service mode but couldn't do it......

Power up, pressed the mon button a few times but it just fell through and continued to the POST.

Any ideas on that?

Highest RSS version is 5.08.00, which I believe is compatible with CPS up to version 1.13.00. After that the CPS jumps up to version 2.00.01, which renders the radio no longer RSS readable if written with the CPS. The latest CPS version is 2.02.00.

None of that is your issue though, since the CPS should be able to talk to the radio regardless of last programmed version. The "failed communication" message indicates it isn't communicating with the radio at all. Have you used this CPS with other MCS radios in the past, and do you have another radio you could try reading with it? Perhaps it's become corrupted...hard to believe on a Windows system I know, but it does occasionally happen!
