I am trying to program my new 5k with both MDC and QCII on the same personality. We use MDC for unit ID's but QCII (I think it's QCII, at least) for pager activation. Is it possible to program both on the same personality?
Thanks in advance,
Evan

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
leave your existing channel with mdc on recieve then create another channel or mode for qcII for recieve. it can't do both on just 1 channel.

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
Alright, thanks. We use QCII for pager activation and MDC for unit radio ID's. I'm trying to be able to see the paging activations while using my radio regurally.
I'm also having a problem with decoding MDC ID's. It'll encode and transmit my ID but it won't display anyone's ID. I've gone through and looked at the settings and compared the new 5k to my 3k and it looks identical. Any ideas? I can email the codeplug if someone wants to look at it.
Thanks,
Evan

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
i think it has to be flashed to decode and display it and i think that flash is separate from the encode.

H14 Digital ID Display?

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
That is the nice thing about some other models. You can choose separate signaling profiles for TX and RX. You could set MDC-1 for the transmit signaling and QC-II 1 for the RX signaling.

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
I may be missing something here, but MDC and QC signalling don't really mix.
QC is a form of paging, and you use it when you DON'T want to listen to dispatch traffic. Our command staff (and certain others) has a "Fire Page" channel that uses the same channel data as dispatch, but with QC muting, auto-entry into the muted state, and a 60-second revert into the muted state. Also, this channel does not scan (scanning will mess up QC timing). They switch to this channel when going into meetings and the like. Fire Alarm can page an individual unit or send a group page in the event of an augmented-assignment incident.
MDC can be used for alerting, but not really for paging, since (other than by turning the volume way down), it does not offer an option for muting routine traffic. Its intended function in this mode is to alert someone that a call came in for him while he was out of the vehicle.
In theory, MDC can also be used for selective calling (i.e., User A transmits and only User B's radio unmutes) -- the conventional analog to trunked "individual call" (on which Nextel "Direct Connect" is based) -- but it doesn't work very well.
Again, it may be my fault, but I'm having trouble visualizing the operational situation in which having a receiver capable of decoding both MDC and QC on the same channel would be useful.

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
In some ways, MDC and QCII do mix. They have different purposes but are used together. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish, and I realize I can't do it the way I want to--but it was my original thought.
We use MDC for unit ID's. R10 keys up, I see '10' on my LCD. What I also wanted to be able to see was the company being dispatched when tones were activated (QCII). So let's say dispatch punches out the tones for Companies 2, 1, and 3 on a structure fire. I wanted to see "COMPANY 2" followed by "COMPANY 1" and so forth as they went off. I thought it was simple enough...I now realize I can't do that the way I wanted to, though.

Re: Programming QCII with MDC
i don't think what you are wanting to do is possible on any radoi, qc won't display anything, only set off an audible/visual warning when it recieves it's tones. if it were possible to do what you want you would not only have to have it set to recieve mdc but also three different qc's, one for each toneout so now you are up to four separate signaling features on one channels recieve side. it would be cool if it could do that & display it too the way you describe. another thing to remember is that qc was originally designed for pagers with no displays, just go off when it recieved the tones on the correct frequency. along the line it just got added to some radios.
