EX500 Get Hot

Post by kallum »

Hi all

Firstly, I have a few EX500's.

Only one of which seems to get warm after being on for a few minutes (even in an idle - no rx/tx - state). This EX500 is a bit newer than the others so I am not sure if it is a problem with a certain revision or not (although my thoughts would sugggest that this is not the case).

I disassembled the unit, and found that it was the controller board was getting hot. Unfortunatley, the hot air re-work station at work is away for repair so I can't take the rf shield off the main components to find an exact source (although even the underside tends to be fairly warm all over).

The radio operates good, with no major reduction in battery life, no loss of audio quality, communicating fine with the programming software etc.

Any comments, suggestions, etc would be appreciated...

Thanks!

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

weird, usually that indicates a bad PA going into oscillation. I've had that happen on several Saber analogs, but they usually drain a fresh battery flat turned OFF in a few hours. Also have had Jedi's that do that- but never a Waris series. The radio should not generate heat in standby or RX, only when transmitting.

Now I have had a bit of a better look, I am suspecting either the audio PA of the AFSIC CMP chip as the source of the heat. But I think it is going to have to wait till I can get a hot-air station to it to remove the sheilding, so I can measure a few values to try and find the true source of the problem.

Any further comments/suggestions are welcome...

Thanks again!
