CDM mobile that turns into a brick when upgrading firmware

Does anyone know how to recover a perfectly working CDM series mobile radio that magically turned into a freekin' paperweight when I tried to upgrade the firmware? There's gotta be a better way than to let Motorola fleece me for a flat rate Depot repair fee.
