Must Channel Selector be changed when going 1 to 16 Ch Jedi

Post by Leadenwah »

Will I need to buy a new Channel Selector switch for my Jedi portable when converting it from a 2 Channel to a 16 Channel radio ?
I figured I'd have to get a new case, but wondered if the Channel Selector knob is limited to 2 positions by the detents on the radio case or is the Selector Switch itself only capable of 2 positions ?

Thanks.

Remove the knob and you should find that the switch will go to all 16 positions. The knob stops it at 2.

To expand on that, there is a stop under the channel knob that will have to be removed to allow the selector to go beyond channel 2. IIRC, the stop is a little plastic post, and is pretty easy to cut off. As for the case, you won't need to change it unless you just have to have the labels correct.

Thanks very much.

That answers my question and that's good news. I can see the little know stop and can cut that cleanly off. I had this fear that I'd get it all set and then find that the selector was prohibited beyond 2 channels INTERNALLY.

This is a big help and thanks again folks.

No problem! Personally, it kind of p!$$es me off when manufacturers do this sort of thing. I have to wonder what the price difference was between the 2 channel and 16 channel version of the HT1000, and the only difference was a knob stop, a decal, and a flag in the codeplug. On the other hand, its great for people like us! I know the 2 channel version is cheaper on the used market. 8)

You can also dremel out the insert in the knob that hits the stop. It's more work, of course, but it keeps the case intact and gives you a 16 channel knob.

actually the difference is also internal, the 2 channel radios lack the RF switch on the RF board, so no use of public safety remote mikes or JVA with these radios, hence their lower resale value.

Just change the knob, do the 'hack', program the added channels and you are done..
