Has anyone had any experience with these cables? I have never used a USB cable before and I would like everyone else's input
Thanks

Re: RIB-LESS USB CABLES ON EBAY FOR EX600
i've bought a few ribless cables for numerous radios
i bought one for the ex600. plugged it into my computer, didn't even work.
before that i bought one for the HT750/1250/etc... radios
it worked for a while
now i have to hold the cable next to the radio in order for the bloody thing to work
my advice
buy a rib.
even if it's one of them ebay ribs, it's better than a ribless probably in my opinion,
and those 10 dollar rib-necessary cables are worth it too

Some ribless cables work well, other do not. If you were working with a higer tier radio I would tell you to be very careful using ribless cables from eBay. On low tier radios....maybe.
Buy a rib if you are going to have multiple types of radios to program. There are aftermarket RIBS that have been discussed here on the board many times that are not very expensive. Use the search feature and you will find some different ones members here have used. The Motorola RIBS have come down in price quite a bit lately. The latest Motorola High teir radios use OEM USB Cables and some people have been selling thier RIBS. I have bought OEM Ribs for as low as $60.00.
Buyer beware on non-OEM cables and RIBS. Sometimes you really get what you pay for.......

Buy off ebay,
Get a ribless programming cable off ebay. The rib cost to much and the cable you want is about $20.00. My friend just got one off ebay and It works 100%. He uses the ex600 ribless cable with his ex600. They do work but some dont and some will temp brick you radio.
*Once you read yoru radio with a aftermarket cable save the codeplug fast. This is so that if it brick your radio you can re write the original codeplug and your set*
My advice, get one off ebay but If you want a cable you can 100% trust on with the motorola name on it get the motorola rib and the adapter.
PM me for the ribless cable on I was talking about

Re: RIB-LESS USB CABLES ON EBAY FOR EX600
Greetings... I'm getting an HT-750 with ribless cable but if I wanted to be more cautious, couldn't I just chop that cable and wire it to the rib like they show here? http://batlabs.com/images/1550svc.gif The "test set" side doesn't *have* to be wired, right? Thanks,
Brian

I bought an OEM RIB and cable for my 1550XLS (turns out the rib came with a cable). I paid full price, $300 for the RIB and $50 for the cable from a Motorola dealer. I bought a ribless USB cable for my EX600's to give it a try, it has worked wonderfully -- that is until recently. I have used it maybe a couple dozen times, and now when I plug it in, windows reports "usb device unrecognized" and tells of a failure. For convenience I got a ribless usb cable for my 1550 too, and its still working. I use it for convenience sake, since I am primarily using my laptop to program and it doesnt feature a serial port.
All this talk about these ribless cables being dangerous has me thinking though... Why exactly can they "brick" a radio? Can a corrupt data transfer permfry a radio? or would simply re-transfering a code-plug put things back to normal? or is there some electrical risk in using those cables?
