MT-2000 chargers

Post by kunu963 »

Could someone please give me a little direction as it pertains to trouble shooting the Motorola MT-2000 / HT-1000 standard and rapid chargers.

I own a number of these radios for personal use and have been experiencing quicker than normal battery failure for some time on numerous battery brands, including Motorola.

I am beginning to think that one of my chargers may be killing batteries.

Can anyone give me an idea what to look for in the charger. They all charge the batteries. Can I check for certain max. voltage on the charger contacts? What range?

I don't need to know how to FIX the bad charger, just to tell which one(s) is/are defective so I can remove it from use.

Thank you for your guidance.

Mike

I had a Jedi (MT/HT/JT) rapid chager a while ago - the kind with the wall wart that's in the middle of the cord, and it started baking the batteries. I never could figure out why.

Are you using a slow charger (light is always red) or a rapid? (light turns green after a while)

We need part numbers of the chargers and part numbers of the batteries to give further guidance. To make it easier you could also find out the chemistry of the batteries for us instead of having to cross-reference by part number.

Glad you brought this up, now I have a quick question.

I have several different Motorola chargers as well. My NTN1174A slow chargers LED stays red as long as a battery is inserted into it. I thought it was supposed to go green after the battery was charged, but you're saying that it's supposed to stay red?

I don't have the manual for it, so I never knew if it was normal for the LED to be red all the time. I just had to get used to making a mental note of the time I put the radio into the charger and take it out 12-16 hrs. later.

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

the overnight chargers LED will stay RED as long as a battery is inserted, even after 16 hours (the time it takes for a full charge). Only rapid chargers have multicolor LED's. The standard chargers have only very simple circuits in them for current limiting and short circuit protection unlike the rapid chargers which usually have a microprocessor or IC to control the charging system.
