Remote Mount Scanners??

Post by kb0nly »

Any affordable remotely mounted scanners out there? Looking at a future install in a second mobile here and i won't have the luxury of a lot of room where i want it, so thinking of a remotely mounted scanner head up front and the body in the back with the ham rig. But i don't see much for scanners of this type, and the stuff i have been able to find online was terribly expensive for what you get!

Anyone that knows of any websites that show modifying any units to a remote mount head, or have pictures of how-to's and such, let me know. Just looking for whatever info i can find to decided where to go with this project.

Hi Scott - I know there is a remote head kit for the new uniden line - i think the 996. Not very affordable though.

Supposedly GRE is introducing new models but I do not know anything about them. There is a thread over on radioreference.com for them you may want to look over as well as the uniden threads.

Good luck.....dan n2aym

Your best bet is the Bearcat BC-RH96 (about $200) attached to either the BCT15 (trunking, no digital, $225 or so) or the BCD996T (trunking, digital, pretty pimpin radio, around $500).

Thanks for the info guys!

The BCT15 is a nice looking scanner and i was contemplating picking up one of them. The only thing i don't like about the BCRH96 is the original head is still left on the scanner, which means something the kids can still fiddle with in the back. The info i was able to find on it online says both the remote head and the stock head can control the scanner at the same time.

It also mentions the control cable is only ten feet but i would imagine that could be lengthened easy enough. I would also have to mount another speaker up front for it as well but thats not a big deal.

Might have to just continue using the ham rig to scan as well. At least around here it's just analog VHF and a little UHF that i monitor. No trunking, no digital, no 800Mhz, etc.. Right now i have a FT-8900 in the mobile, the left side of the display is the ham band stuff and the right side scans the PS stuff.

The interface cable has an odd connector on one end (goes to scanner)... and a 1/8" stereo on the control head end. Extension shouldn't be difficult as long as there's enough signal available (I wouldn't try 500', but 20' should be no problem).

I believe both heads controlling is correct.
