Switch for two Spectras, 1 microphone?

Post by rolncode3 »

I have two remote head Spectras installed in my patrol vehicle. I don't need to be able to talk on them at the exact same instant (at least I can't think of the need for it).

Is there any switchbox which would allow me to hook a single microphone to both of them, and just switch back and forth as I need to transmit?

I saw a battalion chief that had 5 or 6 radios all connected to a single headset/microphone via switchbox, but haven't pursued that at all. His switch appeared to be a custom build.

Did a search, didn't find anything.

Whoa. That's pretty slick, but I can't do a $900 unit. Thanks for the link.

It can be done, just use some dpdt relays from radio shack and a toggle switch, mount it all in a nice little plastic box. You might want to put some jumpers on the relay so that the radio that doesn't have the mic on it thinks its on hook.

Mic connectors aren't cheap. For the price it costs to get the connector itself, you'd spend just as much for a mic. In fact, it may be easier to buy mics off of ebay and cut off the cords to make your adapter box.

I looked at doing something just as large once before but it was difficult to manage without going to crosspoint switches. There's a lot of philosophical questions you have to ask yourself about how you intend to use it.
