JT1000 soft PTT

Post by radef »

Hi All,

I have a VHF JT1000 with a "soft PTT". What I mean is - there is no tactile feedback when I press the PTT button on the radio. It will go into transmit just fine, but you don't feel the "click" as you'd expect. Problem is - your finger can slip off the sweet spot of the PTT button and you won't feel it unkey. It requires keeping an eye on the red LED on top of the radio to make sure you're still transmitting. Using a speaker mic resolves the problem...but my question is...

Does anyone have a solution for fixing this problem? Does it require a new case or replacement of the flexible board inside the radio that has the PTT switch on it?

I can note that if I take the radio apart and push the PTT button (with nothing inside the case) there is no feedback on the button. I don't have another radio to compare this to, so I don't know if that's normal or not. The actual PTT switch on the flexible board is made up of a metal bubble that makes contact with the board under pressure - it has some tactile feedback to it, but it gets lost (so it seems) when the case and outside PTT button get involved.

Any insight?
Thanks,
Justin

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

the popple (the little metal disc) is easy to replace or reposition, it's just held in place with a little piece of clear tape- sometimes you can reposition it and it will work a little better, or just replace it altogether if it doesn't have enough "spring" to it. last I checked they were less than a buck from Ma M, but being that the Jedi series is history, they probably want 5.00 for it.

I did try to reposition the popple with no luck. Any ideas on a part number or how to go about ordering this thing?

I had a similar problem with lack of tactile feedback when pressing the PTT on a VHF JT-1000. I replaced the popple (part # 3905517V01 $2.10 each on businessonline.motorola.com) with no improvement in tactile feedback.

I had a UHF JT-1000 which had good tactile feedback so I swapped the whole front housing between the two radios and the lack of tactile feedback followed the front housing.

I also tried swapping the PTT Lever and Seal assembly and the problem stayed with the front housing.

I have noticed this on radios that come through the shop. Replacing the front cover clears it up when its not the popple.
I think the housing gets warped and/or compressed over time.
