Anyone Tried Using A Ribless Cable On A CDM 20 Pin Accessory

Post by svfd1243 »

I was going to post this to the topic by nmfire10 on nov 19th but thought that it would be considered "topic hijacking" and didnt want to do that.

I added a remote kit to my cdm and ran into that the ribless cable wouldnt work. So I was told that if I went through the rear 20 pin port that I should be able to program. Well i am going to try and expand on the ribless cable without altering it so that I can still use the ribless with other radios but use the extension cable with the ribless for my cdm.

Anyway, here is my theory/plan. I want to take the RJ45 end from the ribless cable and plug it into a CAT5 coupler. I have also learned that the input and output contacts of the coupler is twisted and the contact positions are backwards from in to out. I have a drawing that breaks the RJ45 plug on the ribless as position 4 ground, position 6 boot control and position 7 bus+. I took a 3 foot CAT5 cable cut one end off (pinned it for correct wire coloring and position on that RJ45 connector) and plug the RJ45 connected still attached on the other end of the cable to the coupler. Since the coupler is twisted, for the 3 foot cable, ground will now be on position 5, boot on 3 and bus+ on 2. I bought a couple accessory connectors from board member kurt meltzer. If I understand the drawing for the accessory connector correctly if you are looking at the connector from the side of the flat tab with the 3 holes which is what they call the rear, ground is on the top row 6th slot from the left, bus+ is top row 1st slot, and boot control is the 1st slot on the bottom row. With this all bein said, in theory will it work? Has any one tried it? Any insight would be great.

Thanks!

in theory and on paper most of them should work but in reality anytime you throw usb into a situation where motorola don't make a oem usb cable for it you are playing with fire so if you must proceed with doing that just remember that it will be an expensive mistake if it don't work.

ok sorry, i read one thing and thought another. well then i don't see any problems with your idea working but then again it's just in theory and on paper. in theory and on paper the cdm's should program perfect every time with a remote kit on them but they don't.

Ive also been told that software versions also limit the ability to program through the mic jack once a remote kit has been added. Which Ive only heard that from one person so who knows

that is a fact and motorola put out a bulliten on it a while back actually telling you to put the head back on the radio if you are programming it thru the mic jack.

The actual OEM RLN4853 10 pin modular female to 20 pin accessory connector adapter from Motorola is under $10. It may ultimately be easier and cheaper to just order the genuine article.

Well I picked up a RLN4853B. Tried it with my ribless cable and still get the couldnt open the com port blah blah blah. Im using the 06.04.00 cps. At this point I dont know if my software wont support remote mount radios at all, or if my radio just doesnt want to be accessed while remote mounted. I just know that Im really frustrated. I just recently picked up a rib box. I read a lot of comments about sandy's designed so I picked one up. The only thing I need now is just the cable that goes from the rib to the radio which Ive seen everywhere. Could it be that my radio does not like to have a ribless cable to go through the 20 pin connector? This thing is testing my patience

if it makes you so upset trying to use alot of tricks and adaptors to get it done why don't you just take the radio out and put the head back on it and program it that way the put the remote kit back on it? i've never had one not program from the back port no matter if it had a remote head or radio mount. it really sounds like your problems is the usb. and the 6.04 cps is really old now so you might want to upgrade that. i don't know how far you are from the far west side of Indianapolis but if you want to bring it by i'll do it for you.

CDM 20-pin accessory plug

Post by boteman »

So, to clarify, the RLN4853 is the part number of the entire adapter assembly or merely the 20-pin accessory plug?

I really only want the 20-pin accessory plug so that I can build my own cable to go from my r.i.b. to the radio. Heck, it's only 3 wires according to the schematic here so why not use the more reliable method of the rear accessory connector? Right??

In either case, what is the best method of ordering from Motorola? Their website only directs the viewer to 1-800-367-2346 so I am assuming there is no web ordering system?

Thanks! Happy New Year!
