Radio Setups
Just curious to see how others set up their radios in terms of personalities, scan groups, zones, etc. Given many radios only allow 16 channels per zone and as many as 16 channels to scan at once, I was curious to see how you break up your zones. Im also probing for some idea's on new layouts.

Re: Radio Setup's
I go totally overboard with all of mine.
I usually make the A-B-C switch be ZONE SELECT which gives me 3 banks of 16 channels. I generally make channels 1-7 & 16 identical on all 3 banks. These are my primary fireground, operations, and police channels. 1 & 16 are identical so banging the knob either way to the stop puts me on the primary fireground channel. I want to have rapid access to these channels all the time and don't want an accidental bump of the zone switch to send off into la-la-land. It is for safety and convenience. For the PD, I made it so Zone 1 has TX in Astro, zones 2 & 3 TX in analog. Channels 8-15 are mutual aid and other stuff in order of expected use.
I always end up with at least 10 different scan lists as well. I have different scan lists based on what channel I'm on. If I'm on another town's fireground channel, it will only scan that town's channels. If I'm on my fireground channel, first priority is selected channel, 2nd priority is the repeater. If I'm on the repeater, first priority is selected, 2nd priority is fireground. Other town channels scan everything. Both small side buttons are nuisance delete. The concentric switch normally for secure turns scan on and off.
On the MT1500 and XTS1500, there is only a concentric ABC switch. So I programed it to be zone select. All the channels in zone 1 do not scan. All the channels in zone 2 an 3 are automatic scan. This way, the single switch controls both Zone Select and Scan.
Repeated channels use PTT pre-ID. Talkaround channels use PTT post-ID.
The emergency button is set for NON-SILENT emergency. The way I see it, if I push that thing, I no longer care about being covert.

Re: Radio Setup's
I don't have enough real estate in a 48 channel radio to duplicate channels. Most daily operations tg's go into zone A, secondary operations/lesser used in zone B, and ITACs/InterOp channels go into Zone C.

The Centric Switch (the one on the channel selection knob) I have set for repeter / Simplex operation.

Re: Radio Setup's
Luckily I have no use for monitor or scan list program. I make separate channels for talkaround rather than using a talkaround button.

Which reminds me, I had an old Systems Saber III with an 8D core once (many moons ago) and I remember one of the red buttons I had set up would change the PL code on the mode you were on (to no PL, 100.0, etc.) . Cool feature, wish my MTS could do that

Re: Radio Setup's
Oh man nothing like being in a apartment fire on the 4th floor trying to call command and wondering why no one is answering me then I realized myht1550 switch zones after that call I went home a programmed a keylock button so i didn't make that mistake. Im sure the ambulance company which was one of my customers wondering why I was trying to reach command to tell them i found the fire. lol Know I have a xts3000 with the mic that changes the channels that I love.I want to have rapid access to these channels all the time and don't want an accidental bump of the zone switch to send off into la-la-land.

Minor nitpick: An apostrophe does not mean "Look out! Here comes an S!"Luke wrote:Just curious to see how others set up their radio's in terms of personalities, scan groups, zones, etc. Given many radio's only allow 16 channels per zone and as many as 16 channels to scan at once, I was curious to see how you break up your zones. In the subject "Radio Setups" - 'Setups" is plural, not possessive, and there are no omitted letters, so an apostrophe is not appropriate.
Likewise, in your first sentence, "...set up their radio's...." radios is plural, not possessive.
This is my opinion, not Aeroflex's.

By the way, how are your "radios" setup? Corrections noted and edited. Thanks.
