Centracom Gold Elite upgrade to windows XP

Post by eltel2910 »

Hi all- We will be doing an upgrade on our radio system dispatch computers from Windows NT 4.0 to XP on Saturday 12/22/07. We have Centracom Gold Elite consoles on a Smartnet II system. Everything for the upgrade was supplied from Motorola. Along with the computers and software they also sent firmware for the BIM, ACIM, COIM, TIMI. The only thing they did not sent is really good, step by step instructions on how to procede with the upgrade and what order to do everything in. Has anyone done one of these upgades? Can you give me a heads ups on what to expect and what order to do things in. I would think that first I would replace the firmware in the CEB (I have already backed up the the old NT server and transfered the data to the XP server), then next I would install the server and then install one of the dispatch console computers (hooked up to the CIE). Our CEB is at the radio tower about 1 mile away so the communications are done via a T-1 protocol over fiber. Any help would be appriciated, as I am trying to minimize down time.

We upgraded just a few months ago from NT to XP. All we done was changed the chips (8) on the SIMM located on the COIM cards and replaced the computers for each operator position. While one Tech was changing the chips had another Tech changing out the computer. Everything went very well with our upgrade.

So your OP's are all ROCI/CORI type remote operator positions? Why did you guys put the CEB up at the site? Seems to me it would've been more cost-effective to put the CEB in the dispatch center and run the TIMI links and TBIM links over the T-1... Less of a maintenance headache in situations like this one. Curious, what was the motivation for doing it the way it is?
