saber question
Ok i have programed a bunch of radios in the past few years so i have alot of software and cables and such. Now a guy at work has a Saber older model maybe a model 2?? it has a lcd screen and 3 redish buttons under that. I tried to read the radio but i am unable to do so (gives me an error). I am not sure if i have the right version of software running or not. What version do i need and what is the part number for it? I would give specific details about the radio and problems but i left the paper with my notes on it at work. Any help would be great. If i need to post the model number i will be able to post it saturday night when i return to work. Thanks in advance.
Re: saber question
The software for a Saber is RVN4002. I think the latest version was 7.01.
You also might have a System Saber. The software for that one is RVN4051. Latest version 4.01?

Re: saber question
Thanks for the replies, it definatly is a saber2 but i tried the new software and i cannot get it to read. I am using a toughbook CF-27 p2 booted with a dos disk. Computer still may be a bit to fast for it.

Re: saber question
I am betting its is to fast . You need an old slow 386 and true dos to run RSS 7.01
Re: saber question
According to the RSS Pentium Compatability Matrix, Saber RVN4002K R07.01.00 dated late 1993 will work on a Pentium computer. If this is indeed the version you are using, I would think the problem might be elsewhere.
You might want to include such details as type of RIB, type of RIB-to-radio cable, has this setup worked on other Sabers before, etc.

Re: saber question
It Could also be a MX2000 instead of a saber II, that will give you an error with saber RSS

Enough already; please make it stop!
SMK8ER: What is the exact error you are getting? Please spell it out for us.
Is your RSS version 6? Perhaps the radio was last programmed with version 7?
Give us as many specific details as you can. This problem should not have taken this
long to solve.

Re: saber question
I dont think Tom was being snide. I've delt with Tom on many occasions. He has helped me with a few Saber related snafus. If we have what the errors are its easier to diagnose if its a hardware, software or radio issue.
Re: saber question
Tom's not trying to be a dick - you keep posting saying it won't work but you're not posting specifics. Being as absolutely detailed as possible helps greatly when trying to diagnose problems like this - too much info is better than not enough.smk8er wrote:WOW Sorry to be such a hassle. Now, take a deep breath, count to ten, and meditate for a while. When you're relaxed, feel free to try it again.
Re: saber question
Older versions of the Saber II require the user to press all three buttons while turning the radio ON, then proceed with reading/writing of the radio.
It's clunky and no very efficient, but that's the way that model worked.
You also do not have the options available for that model as a later version has, like selectable PL, user selectable scan or possibly mode slaved scan.
I don't remember all the nuances for that version as I am moving away from the boat anchors(sorry).
They were darn good radios in tehir time, but time marches on, and the Saber is now becoming a dinosaur.
I have a small fortune of Sabers and parts collecting dust, and can't get rid of them.
I am happy I got away from servicing them when I did, or I'd be in Saber hell with no way out.

Re: saber question
Another possibility is that you have an ATS Saber. I've never seen an ATS as a Saber II, only as a Saber I, but they take a totally different RSS from Saber and System Saber.
From what I could see of an ATS is that it looked like it was a standard Saber model that could do trunking, but lacked the other features of a System Saber.

Re: saber question
And if it's an Australian SP303 Saber (if the channel knob has two positions, with one marked LOCAL that's what you have), normal American RSS will crash and die if you try reading it.
