I have heard rumors that there was a lab version of the Saber SI software that would allow you to create a VHF or UHF codeplug in addition to the standard 800mhz versions.
Is there any truth to this?

yes, it exists. and I did actually hold in my hand a UHF Saber SI that was a development radio. It had a weird feel to the housing (completely smooth, no surface if that makes sense) the radio also had a paper tag on the back I've never seen before. The only RSS that could read it was LAB. Regular MTSX (older versions) would also read/write my 800 SI. The SI RSS was buggy and crashed, not to mention everytime I tried to do alignment with it, it would FAIL 01/92 the radio requiring a S-record push to wake it up again.
I was glad to rid myself of that radio.

It's kinda weird you came across a SI like that, I came across a Astro Saber @ Dayton one year with the smooth case, it was definatly different. I never tried to read it, the seller told me that he couldn't read it with regular RSS though.
