How to identify a STX?
I did not see a comprehensive list for the model breakdowns on the main batlabs page. What does model# H25STE5170BN break down too?

Re: How to identify a STX?
there were so many variations made, what really matters is the controller inside. The older Privacy Plus and Smartnet I boards, which usually but not always are a "red" color, are least useful. They usually have firmware versions such as "SEC" for securenet or plain old "VER x.xx" which usually are type I only. The most desirable are the "821 Gemini" controllers which do type II, and usually are "GPL" or "GPS" and "REL" which are for STX821 and STX800 respectively. The 800 and 821's usually have full alphanumeric displays, and have transceivers that are optimized for the (now old) NPSPAC frequencies. The STX is one of the most hackable trunking radios Ma M ever produced, hard to brick them too. Lots of PP STX and Smartnet I's were later retrofitted with REL/GPL type II controllers and displays. So what really matters is the firmware inside. The Batboard main page has a pinout of the programming cable, IIRC you can short two pins upon power up and it will display the firmware without you having to read the radios in RSS to see what the brain is inside.
The views here are my own and do not represent those of anyone else or the company, the boss, his wife, his dog or distant relatives.

Re: How to identify a STX?
The STX comes 3 ways STX, STX 800 and STX 821.
STX model numbers: I let someone borrow my STX service manual so I'll have to get back to you on that.
The cases are all the same, the different sub-models (800 and 821) are marked on the front of the case. Buying one from eBay is a total crap-shoot. I once got a full keypad and display STX 821 case with a non-display STX radio in it. It's not a simple software fix to make a non-keypad radio a keypad radio because you need to add a strip ckt.
STX is a good movie prop, but that's about it.
STX 800 & STX 821 radios will do Type II. To program the trunking you need a system key or lab RSS. I'm told that the algorithm has been cracked and there is a freeware key generator out there.
A secure capable STX radio will have a second knob on the top for the securenet. Unlike a Saber, you don't need a dummy plug if you don't have the secure module installed.

Re: How to identify a STX?
Are you sure that's the right format? I don't know STX at all, but I do know that it doesn't seem to follow the usual Motorola numbering. Example is the Saber, where the fifth position was the power level (same for XTS5000). The highest letter the Saber goes to in that position is F.CAPTLPOL wrote:I did not see a comprehensive list for the model breakdowns on the main batlabs page. That must be a Type I radio, or maybe PP. I'm only familiar with these Smartnet models - This list comes directly from the STX SMARTNET owners manual.
H25 or H35WKA5170_N 15-button keypad, 16-pos rotary knob
H35WKQ5170_N 15-button keypad, no rotary knob
H25 or H35WPA5170_N 3-button keypad, 16-pos rotary knob
H25 or H35WPQ5170_N 3-button keypad, no rotary knob
H35WGA5170_N 3-button keypad, 2-pos rotary knob (secure)
H35WNA5170_N no keypad, 16-pos rotary knob
H25 or H35WKA5170_N 15-button keypad, 16-pos rotary knob

H35WNA5170_N no keypad, 16-pos rotary knob
Re: How to identify a STX?
It has the keyboard and rotary knob. I will need to take another look at it when I see it next.

Right out of the service manual..CAPTLPOL wrote:I looked at it again. It is H25STE5170BN.
Power - 1 Watt

Rotary Knob - Subfleet Select (Lettered Escutcheon) 2, 8 or 16 position
Display and Keypad:

3 keys was standard, a full keypad could be added without effecting the model number.
