MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?

MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
I have a few dig capable UHF MSF-5000's with similar problems. I'm trying to connect an external controller and bypass the internal functions. Done this plenty of times without much problem. However, no matter how I configure different things the RX1 audio is muted as soon as the Tx comes up. Not desense but something is switching/gating/disabling for some reason.
This particular unit has an MCS that was bypassed & disabled. doesn't seem to matter. TTRC also disabled or not and doesn't seem to matter.
Pulling T/R audio & PTT off the MRTI comnector or local test points-doesn't matter. MRTI enabled and in the PTT priority list along with Local.
The sscb firmware is NOT v5.x but rather 3 something I believe and maybe 4.1 for TTRC. Is it possible or advantageous to get a newer eprom for the sscb?
I also tried a default conv.def file and conv_3.def file. the first ome would not get a response from the sscb and the _3 is the wrong version.
The other 2 seem to be identical with wildcards and special dtmf decode boards but having similar problems tryimg to bypass the expansion tray and option boards. not sure what the versions are yet. any ideas on easy way to strip these guys down to bare bones operation and pass rx audio?
Not much more hair to pull out! Help.
Thx.

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
Check U831 pin 3 on the SSCB assembly and see if the leg has been cut. If the cabinet has been used in a simulcast system this is the mod to disable in cabinet repeat gated audio. Hopefully (if its been cut) there is enough metal to solder to in order to restore the connection.

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
You have covered several issues here, so let's focus on the problem at hand.
Start by upgrading your firmware in both the SSCB and the TTRC. Just do it.
Next, you have to disable the repeat function. You don't need a repeater, you need a full duplex base station.
For the interface, remove the expansion tray. You don't need it.
Leave the TTRC connected and set it up as a 4 wire board. Set up the external PTT as line. Set up the aux out as a RX1 active line.
Unless you need discriminator audio for some outboard decoder of some kind, use the line in and line out from the TTRC. PL decoding should be done in the base. For that matter if you need different access tones, use the MCS option.
There it is...line in, line out, PTT and Receiver Active...Done!
You need to dig into the options screens and find the one marked full/half duplex. Again, make sure repeat is disabled.
And another thing...how do you KNOW the repeat audio is muted? Is it REALLY muted or is it disconnected for that goofy simu-kill-the-in-cabinet mod? Have you checked this with the DMP?
Is your goal to run the audio through the MSF or your controller? Do you want to have the controller handle just the PTT and carrier detect function?
Since I am at work, wake me when it's time to go home...or someone bring me some DMD. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
Guys thanks for the info but so far nothing has fixed things.
Here's some answers, questions and other info to help further troubleshoot if anyone can recognize the symptoms:
U831 pin 3 on SSCB is in tact.
How exactly can the firmware be upgraded? Is it replacing the eproms or hardcoded or board p/n specific? SSCB=v3.15/TLN3043A 3109C & ttrc=4.10
Repeater function has been disabled & set for full duplex.
expansion tray is gone as is the MCS board.
I need audio out/in, cos, ptt funtions to drive external controller.
I'm also running in CSQ and use the discrim out for driving two external tone boards for a dual pL type system into the external controller.
Here's what is happening... (on the DMP) As soon as the TX ACT comes up the RX1 ACT light goes out. I've tried this with MRTI PTT & LOC PTT lines.
The RX1 & RPT UNSQ stay lit with carrier but the receiver seems to go bye-bye and comes right back as soon as the tx stops.
However, I can force it to stay on with the DMP and proper bits activated. Of course it stays in open CSQ which isn't an issue as the cor will make the contrroller gate the audio but if the station is power cycled without the DMP plugged in it will revert to the way it was acting.
Same problem if I put it in RX PL but use the PL disable switch or program for rx ON all the time.
It's acting like a base operating on the same rx/tx freq and the rx is getting shut off when it's txing.
It is set up with 2 connectors on the side panel as if it were hooked up to house combiner/rx system but no sign of a t/r relay.
WHat am I missing?

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
I think this is a programming/firmware issue. You need the upgrade. 5.56 for SSCB and 5.34 for TTRC. Some will say 5.52 or 5.46 or something. Take a poll.
Grab your PTT and COS from the TTRC. This is explained in the programiming book.
You need a cable from the TTRC to the external DB25. There should be a cable present for this.
You can put audio in to the TTRC from the external screw terminals. That covers your audio and PTT going in.
Get your audio from the base at the TTRC output.
Get your COS from the same connector as the PTT DB25 going in.
Since you have a need for discriminator audio, you are on your own for that one.
That's it.
Now, if your TTRC doesn't work for your control signals, you can use a wild card and get your RX1 active and Line PTT from the wild card ribbon connector.
I still say you have a firmware/programming issue.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wake me when I need to go home.....better still...start an IV with a Mountain Dew drip.

My two bits worth:
In the options screen set the station for "Full Duplex".
Your audio will not mute.

If it was only that easy...Been down that road multiple times and toggled different settings but RX1ACT still goes out with TX1 active.
It's possessed I tell you.

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
It's firmware, I tell you!
I cast out ye demons of foul and unrichous behaviour with a blessing of FIRMWARE
And remove thee with the hand of the mighty PROM PULLER!
Cower in the purgetory of the fire of the purifying PROM ERASER
And all your decrepid sins will be no more when overwritten by the hammer of the PROM BURNER!
I bless thee in the name of the Motrac, the MICOR and the MSR!
So be it.
On the other hand, if your original prom is a 256 K in the SSCB and 128K in the TTRC, you are screwed.
You need a 512K in the SSCB and a 256K in the TTRC for the latest loads.
Can I get me an AMEN?
Thought so!

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
My two bits worth:
Amen brother George.
As far as firmware is concerned you are preaching to the choir.
There are several very strange problems associated with the early firmware version.
If this showed up in a station optioned at the factory, you would have an "SP" firmware installed.
I had this very problem with a trunking system with a console. It worked fine as long as the DMP was left connected.
The solution was newer firmware.
In a former life I used to install and maintain the MSF. Actually, I still do, there is a CXB with a Trident raider sitting in my shop now.
With early firmware only do some functions not work as expected, such as your audio problem, the worst problem was that the station would one day become inoperative. The green VCO lights were on, no transmit.
After reset the station might work for days, or years. Perhaps never have the problem in the first place.
Another problem: If the processor got some corruption of the internal CP the processor would "loop" rendering the board impossible to program.
Having a chip programmer (Intronics) I copied the latest firmware from the newest station to hit the shop floor.
I updated every MSF that I worked on. Being very lazy I try to not have to go back for repeat service calls.
You will need RSS version 5.19 or 5.21. The only difference is a detail that has to do with Secure operation.
I have not had these problems in many years as I updated all stations that I worked on.
Any V5.xx is fine for most applications.
Obtain the firmware for the SSCB and the TTRC. You have 27256, the new chip will be on 27512 or 27C. Blank chips are plentiful and cheap.
Assuming you are planning to use the present programming, read the code plug, save it to the archive file.
A note here, it is often best to build a new CP from the .def file in the RSS, especially when building a new machine.
A trunking code plug cannot be modified for conventional operation.
Programming:
Using what ever code plug image you intend using, go to the CP upgrade screen. It will indicate current version, as well as being able to change to V5. follow the instructions.
It is necessary for the file in the RSS match the actual firmware version installed in the station.
Part of the operating system of the station resides in the RSS file. That is how minor factory up grades are done, as well as allowing for various models that have little in common except hardware.
Install the new firm ware chips. Be sure that the chip is properly oriented, as well as be sure that all pins engage the socket pin. It is possible to fold a pin under the chip. If you are lucky it won't work.
Power the station, you will have all sorts of error codes.
Program the new CP. On rare occasion I had to program twice.
The 3 segment display will indicate "PRG"
All of the EEPOTS will need to be reset.
(Alignment screen)
I have a programming cable that uses the mike jack, as well as has a pig tail with an BNC for receive and transmit. Makes testing and aligning the MSF easy. I have this on a .pdf, free for the asking
.
There are two RF connectors as this station was used on a site with a receiver multicoupler, and transmitter combining.
If I knew exactly what you intend to accomplish, the requirements of your controller, I could recommend programming, and connection points.
Please ask questions if I am not clear.

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
Praise the Lord my brothers! I am seeing the light. It's hidden in a chip or two and calls itself Firmware.
It lurks out there deep in the black of night and if I act NOW I can have my own for a price not much more than a bottle of holy sea water blessed by Peter Popoff himself!
I am truly saved! Hear me shout...Heathan's go home and do not darken my doorstep again. For the good ship lollypop is coming to set this poor wretched and beaten MSF away from all this mis-banging of bits and bytes. I am truly saved and hopefully will be healed soon.
I await thee Chips... that must be oredered with a 20 day lead time... to come and show me the path of hapiness and joyfulness. I await thee with open arms and a credit card reciept.
Thanks guys, the entertainment was definately worth it. I forgot now what my original problem was...
I will keep yee posted of progress or my demise. keep thinking happy thoughts for me.

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
Brother George & Bernie,
I lost sight of the light. The heathens are at my doorstep again and it's getting ugly...
I ended up getting brand new SSCB & TTRC EPROMS and went right for the jugular and replaced the EPROMS. Guess what? Can't seem to read or write to them.
Here are the scenarios:
First off, the RSS is 5.21; the latest I believe.
Second, the new TTRC chip is labeled as 5.41.
The SSCB is only labeled with the part number TVN6055A, no version, date, etc.
I replaced the chips and tried to read the station. I get a "d83" error on the station (sscb eprom/version issue/recently changed...).
When I try to read or program to it the station LED screen says "prg" but the RSS gives errors and will not read or write.
I tried loading the conv_3.def file to the station and I get "Wrong SSCB version number can not read this codeplug." If I try the conv.def file it seems to recognize that the station is a version 5 SSCB & TTRC and updates the codeplug but when it tries to write to it at the 3% status point it comes back with the same error.
If I try to read it normally or as a station with a fatal error it says "Station does not respond. Please check connections and try reprogramming."
I tried a different set of new chips and on another station that was giving me grief as well and same deal.
I wonder if I can take a working set of chips from another station and put them into this beast and use the new chips in the donor station??
Any thoughts or ideas on what the problem is now?
I was on the road to believing but now I'm faltering. SAVE MY SOUL!
Thanks.
Tom

Re: MSF-5000 RX Audio/TX Gating problem?
Tom:
The new code plug MUST match the existing firmware chips. In your case you must "upgrade" your code plug to ver 5 for SSCB & TTRC.
I would not expect you to be able to read the existing code plug after the firmware chips are replaced.
I have to go to work now. If you still have problems creating a code plug I or some one else could make the file for you.
The file is small and can be e mailed.

I'm a Believer now! It's FIRMWARE I TELL YOU! Oh wait, you said that...
I got it working after I realized the error of my ways. When programming the new conv.def file (and upgrading it, which it makes you do anyway) into the new eeproms, I neglected to tell it there was NO secure board which is defaulted to "enabled" in the factory default codeplug. Once I disabled that it finally started talikng to the station and came up and audio was passing and repeating like the angels singing above.
It was a beautiful thing and I think I had a tear in my eye or I peed my pants or both and definately a couple of monkeys jumped off my back!
I'm pretty confident I can interface an external controller now and get this to do what I need. Man, what a pain in the ass this was.
I'm a firm believer now.
IT'S THE FIRMWARE!
Thanks for all your guy's help and advice!

This is what is called "experience". If you survive you will be a better man for it.
Look at what you have learned. Much better than having things work the first time.
Neat thing about Batlabs is that we all can share experiences, we do not have to come up with all the answers independently.
Some of us are in the business, others are hobbyists, but we all share a common interest.

Hallaujah!
Motrac be praised!
Micor Be praised!
MSR be praised!
MTR be praised!
Allah...nevermind....( I hear he works for Ma/Comm anyway. Oh and that explains why the Mastr III hasn't been replaced yet.)
The demon of old FIRMWARE has be cast into the depths!
The foul stench of code gone wrong is NO MORE!
And a station LIVES in the light of No Errors!
The way to rightousness has been RESTORED and audio allowed to pass, like in the words of the Prophet Altec, Voice of the Theatre
"So that all may hear"
It's okay to pass some urine also, but better urine than mine.
Go forth, my son, and let your heart be not troubled.
Can I get me an AMEN?
Oh, and another thing...GOD BLESS AMERICA! No matter what some goofy pasture in Chicago says. And that was intentional...because that guy was full of what you find laying in a pasture.
Okay, now that this is fairly well overwith, go back and reread the section about how to do the controller interface. Just use the TTRC and the associated signals and you will be more than happy.
When an MSF is involved, firmware upgrades are automatic. When Elliot Spitzer is involved, a prosecution, like a condom should be automatic, but it's not...darn!
I am at home...asleep and awaiting my MT Dew drip to start.
