Differences in talkgroup programming

Post by RADIOMAN2002 »

I understand Motorola Type II talkgroups, but after looking at programming software in 3 different types of radios, I am a little confused in their different terminology of talkgroups and how they get each one. For instance the Type II programming in a Spectra is pretty straight foward, you have you individual ID (transmit ID) and then you have the talkgroup I presume it receives on. The radio ID starts with a 7, and is 6 digits long, the talk group is programmed as HEX or as decimal 6 digits long. Now a Maxtrac's has the individual ID which starts with a 7 and is 6 digits long but its talk group start with 8 and are 6 digits long and has a maximum of 4095 talk groups, and don't accept HEX, which doesn't match the talkgroup numbers of the Spectra? Can someone give a basic explanation why it's this way. Or how to convert one to another. I have done both a Google search and one here, but there is no relevant information. BTW I looked also in Astro Spectra/Saber, and MTX8000 programs , but there is no information as to why the talkgroups start with a 8 and are 6 digits long in their programs either..

In type II trunking systems in the system control interface (however you interface it) the subscribers are actually given I7xxxxxx numbers while the talk groups are given I8xxxxxxx. That is how the system tells the difference between talk group and subscriber. It has more to do with the system controller than the radio.

As far as the differences in the RSS how one is hex and the other decimal, well that's cause there are several different groups of programmers that write the RSS and now CPS software. They don't tend to work together much to come up with a software standard. i.e. the MAJOR differences between Pro series CPS and Pro series trunking CPS.

Appreciate the reply, I did find more detailed explaination on Winkepedia. Also a conversion program to change from one type of system and ID's to another. I do know that the radio ID is what tells the Central Controller what group to assign it to. I couldn't even find an explaination in the Central Controller service manual. I guess Motorola doesn't want too much info let loose.

Converting is easy once you know the math behind it. Using the Windows calculator in scientific mode is quick and simple.

HEX=8A1 ---> 8XXXXX

- Select HEX mode
- Enter "8A1"
- Click "DEC"
Will now show 2209
- Add 800,000 this number and you get 802209 which is the 8XXXXX number to use in CPS/RSS Full Vision etc.

To get from 802209 to 8A1 just reverse the steps above.

To get the scanner version:

8A1 ---> Scanner

- In HEX mode enter "8A1"
- Click DEC
Will now show 2209
- Multiply by 16 and you get 35344, which is what you put in the scanner.

Scanner ---> HEX

Do the above in reverse, substitute the multiplication by 16 with division by 16.
