Opinions on PR-400

Anybody have any hands on with a PR400? Kinda wandered how they hold up and how the tx and rx was. Maybe eventully upgrade from my ht750. also looking at the vertex vx180 if anybody is familiar with them. Thanks

Just like a CP200, but they do LTR.

No other difference that I can tell between the 2, talking between each other or otherwise. They both share the same accessories, and pretty much look the same with the exception of the PR400 having the silver M logo on the front.

The HT750 is probably a better option.

But for my needs I would go with a HT/JT1000 or MT2000

Again, depends on what you are wanting to do/use with the PR400. It's a sturdy little unit however it has the same inherent flaws as the old GP300/SP50 radios. Those option jacks just don't like any kind of abuse. However with the PR's (and CP's for that matter) generally you can get away with a reflow, however it's more likely the pad will be broken next time your audio gets intermittent. Personally I wouldn't change to a PR if I could get ahold of HT1250LS radios. Although PR's are quite a bit easier to program.

I owned one before used it for the fire department. as previously stated side jacks dont like to be really abused recomened the clamp that holds the mic in from moving. also the volume control and channel selector are well know for locking up or going bad. other then that its a good little radio. Stupid band splits 136-160 and 146-174 so if your ham forget about having weather channels dumbest thing they did with this radio line like the uhf radios 438-470 and 470-476 how you suppose to do any ltr trunking when most systems need 450-512 got to be the worst thing they ever did. So kenwood got all the sales for any ltr sales. just my 2 cents. Back on track audio quality pretty good both transmit and recieve. they can take a beating had a fireman drop one in a fire and it came out covered in wet nast soot wiped it off and the radio was fine. sold alot in commercial setting. it has mdc decode with aliasing which is cool and quickcall encode and decode plus dtmf if you have it and i believe mpl. Very small which is nice doesnt way very much. cps is very easy to use and configure.

As others have stated, it's a good feature rich unit for the price point. If you make heavy use of a speaker/mic, or use the radio in very dusty/wet environments, then the HT1250LS+ is a better choice if you're gonna use in on LTR systems. Otherwise, if 16 channels are enough then the PR860 is a great choice.

If you dont have a display you have to "count the clicks". Thats if you remember which channel is what. But I may look into upgrading sometime. I would like to have a ht1250. When buying a good used radio which is more expensive?

I'd rather "count the clicks" but anyway, how many channels do you need? 2 - 8 - 16 -
you can get 16 channels on an HT1000 with or without a display..Or 160 channels to 255 on a MT2000 ... An HT1250 is a good radio.... Theres one thing I learned over 35 years ago with radios in general. They cost more money today! New! As for "good used" depending on who its going to & what its for. "You roll the dice" I like to put "good Used" radios on a service monitor/analyzer, check the guts, and make sure it does the job. good -used , which is more expensive? Think I'll let some one else answer that....just another thought (lot of tension today) Jim

Just my two cents on the PR400 vs HT1000 (used) or HT750

Using accessories? Go with HT1000 or HT750/Waris series,better connectors.That 2 pin port just is trouble with mic or headsets.

No need for Remote Mic or accessories then go with PR400,16,32 ( Diplay,ltd keypad) or 64 channel ( Full DTMF with display) models.

If you can find a decent priced used HT1000 they now have a blue tooth headset with PTT.
