Has any one programmed an HT1000? I want to know how difficult it is, and if you truly need a computer that runs DOS or a DOS based operating system will do. What are my programming options. Any advice about RIB-less cables? What should I know?

The nice thing about the Minitor's it is free to download the programming manual so you know what you are getting into and what options you can program. I was looking for some equivalent of that

1) Since the HT1000 RSS is DOS based and insists upon direct control of the UART, yes you do need a PC running under native DOS or you risk bricking the radio.

2) Stay away from RIB-less cables. In fact, for my money, stay away from any but Motorola cables.

3) Foregoing achieved, the HT1000 is one of the easiest of the Motorola portables to program.

I just did my HT1000 and it was easy...even from scratch. In defense of rib-less cables i use one from a reputable ebay seller valley_ent and ive never had an issue.

I'm sorry, but that's a classic Captain Obvious comment.
Now in all seriousness, welcome to the board and you have picked a great radio to start with. As long as you know what you want to put into it, the software is pretty simple.
You can use a windows 95 or 98 pc, but when you start the computer, you need to hit f8 and get the boot menu, then select command prompt only or use a boot disk.
Stay away from aftermarket ribless cables and NEVER buy a usb one. They do not contain all the correct circuitry. Buy one of the knock off ribs and cables if you don't want to pay for an original.
