SpectraTac Discr. Amplifier Module

I just acquired some SpectraTac receiver assemblies and there is a "Discr. Amplifier" plug-in module in all of them. The manual does not describe what this module does. I haven't worked on this series before and am just starting the learning curve. Can someone fill me in on the purpose of this module?
