motorola mdt ham radio

Just wondering if anyone has ever used the old motorola mdt terminals on ham radio channel for general chit chat or if anyone has every wrote a simple cad program for packet.

I thought it would be cool to have a skywarn cad program were you could send messages back and forth to single users or large amounts of users using packet protocol. Never really played with packet or aprs looks more geared towards like sattelite stuff. The more I use the cad system at work for dispatching i thought it would be cool for skywarn stuff. Any Ideas?
