HamCom/ Texas Convention

Post by hamop16 »

I live in the area and was wandering if anyone else from the board was planning on going? Is there a simplex frequency for batlabbers at hamfests? Wanna pick one and meet up?

I'll be there in the a.m. Tomorrow is my anniversary; so I have to leave mid-afternoon to get back home and take care of the wife and dinner.

What a GREAT anniversay present to myself! I found a brand new (Paperwork dated '02) Spectra Suitcase repeater with all of the literature, all cords and all still sealed in original plastic.. The best part: $200.00! Powers up, TX 60 watts. It's a low split UHF, but I'll tinker with it and make it holy. I have the most recent (rev.1.1) software, so as soon as I can; it's play time! Woo Hoo!

I saw several guys toting 5000s that I didn't recognize, but none with the American flag sticker on them. Guess we never crossed paths. You must've snagged that suitcase early too, 'cause I was there at 9:00 in the AM on Saturday and never saw one.

For future reference, Victor Xray and I, as well as most/all of the guys that run with us at the Texas hamfests, are going to be on either 146.495 (67.0 PL/NAC 293) or 446.495 (67.0 PL/NAC 293). I'll also monitor Batlabs Green (151.88, DPL 143/NAC 293) occasionally, but no one mentioned that they were going to be on it this time around.

I got there around 0900 as well, but I found this guy right off. Actually, that's not true. I wandered through the boneyard for an hour before I went inside - then he was the first one I saw. He was on the back row about two tables down from the door prize tumbler. Older guy - the kind you would think to be the last person on earth to have one like this. He didn't have any other Motorola gear out, and this was just sort of sitting under the skirt of his table. I was just asking out of curiosity, and he gave me the usual "used car salesman" story: "Oh, yeah; I bought that a another hamfest. I was going to fix it up and use it, but I just never had time." I'm thinking RIGHT! You can't use it because you don't have the SW to program it. He asked me to make him an offer. I told him "I don't want to insult you - I only have $150.00 on me. This was true, because I really hadn't come to buy anything but a few nickel and dime connectors. He grimaced and said; Nah; I gotta get at least $200.00 for it. I shoved the $150.00 in his hand and said Where's the closest ATM?! I hauled a$$ to the ATM and closed on it before you could blink.

Hopefully; next year; I'll be in the country, and it won't be my anniversary. Of course; I hope to get to Dayton next year, also. Yeah, right! I've been saying that since '97. I used to go to Dayton every year, but haven't made it since then.

Take care

Jim
