- What radios do you own?: Progreso soup can with CRT
After trying to decipher the many escutcheons listed in the "M" parts book (most of which are listed without any description except for one generic word), I've given up and now always enlist the help of a parts person at "M" to, hopefully, advise me on the exact stick-on that I need. I still have not been able to get them to tell me the part number of a 1E sticker with
"R-D" on it instead of the two sets of dots, which is really a Securenet, not a 1E, item. I think that as time goes on there are fewer and fewer people at Motorola who know anything about the "older" units, such as Sabers I, II, III etc.

On the Saber 1E, if you ever get a definitive answer on the correct symbols for the switch let us know. I have two Saber 1E's and each one has a different switch label(r/d and ./..)for the two positions. As far as I can tell both are original and have never been repackaged.
I thought the secure/clear had a circle and a circle with a slash thought it?

Eddie: I guess that you could interpret the R/D legend as most likely being a police radio, where talkaround is commonly used, whereas the one dot/two dot radio escutcheon might indicate zone 1/zone 2 configuration, which is probably what you and I have the radios set for rather than talkaround. You're right, of course, about the Securenet legend; it should be circle/circle-with-slash. When I recently changed the top of my 1E I managed to mess up the switch when I pulled it out of the radio, so I'm not anxious to repeat THAT fiasco which cost me about $15 for the part from M. Fortunately it just popped in and now the radio is okay. Later on I learned that there's a release for the shaft and handle on the switch. Live and learn, right? The reason I changed the escutcheon was that the 1E radio came with a Securenet legend on top, a Secure long case, and a Secure filler/spacer. Best guess is that someone must have converted the QXJ to an SAJ sometime in the past. I don't intend to see what exactly the radio is inside, but it's an interesting, and maybe unique, Saber.

Hi Tom,
Indeed that sounds like one unique Saber1E that you have. I have never taken any of my Sabers apart to that degree although I have switched some main boards and modules from one frame to the other. I will keep that in mind if I ever have to disassemble that top switch.
As you said, I believe that the difference for the symbols could be model differences in the intended users . The RSS options list refers to a Talkaround Option and a Two Zone Option. I use mine as a two zone for a total of 24 Channels. Maybe the radios could be ordered as such with different lableing originally.
Speaking of breaking things...I had been very fortunate until lately. I was tightening down the spanner nut on one of my Sabers and found the Chrome base plate that the battery attaches to had cracked. I am not to sure if I overtorqued it or if the radio hed been previously damaged. It was a fairly new unit of mine so I had not given it much attention. This is something to keep in mind......
Talk to you later,
Eddie

Eddie: Your story about cracking the battery plate makes me think that I should buy a Rototorq tool from Motorola, even though I THINK I'm doing fine with just a spanner bit in a 1/4-inch drive ratchet handle. I got the bit in one of those multi-part bit sets which are packaged in the blue or red plastic takeapart holders about 2X2X3 inches in size. The largest spanner bit in these sets, which are always being sold at big hamfests by the "tools" guys, fits the spanner-head captive screws on Sabers perfectly, but I see the need more clearly now for following the manufacturer's torque specs.

Yeah......I don't know if I induced it or if it was already like that. It was quite an older radio and been used heavily from the signs of wear on it. I was'nt using the official spanner tool so I may be partly to blame. I don't think of myself as heavy handed though. I went looking for a spanner set at Home Depot but came up empty handed.
I am sort of overwhelmed with Sabers at this point and am trying to get my radios in order. I have the two service manuals ordered so I can become a little more knowlegible on this series. The manuals are actually quite affordable. Guess Motorola really makes up for the difference with the prices for the parts.
So far, I have seven Sabers I am toying with.
I am already spoiled by the Sabers super audio. I went to listen to my ICOM W32A HT yesterday and found I now more quickly notice the inferior sound quality of that little speaker.
Take care,
Eddie

Hello Tom,
I received my Motorola Saber Service Manuals and was paging through and happened to see something we were discussing.
That is the P/N for the ESCUTCHEON Saber IE.
It lists two numbers and those are: 1305622Q28 and 1305622Q29(says submersible on the latter one).
And the Part Numbers for the regular 12 Freq. (Non Saber IE) ESCUTCHEON is 1305622Q01 and 1305622Q11(says Emergency for the latter one)
Hope that helps,
Eddie N4UMJ
