I have several (6 unit) Saber gang chargers (NTN4797C).
The aging lots of Motorola NTN4595D batteries needed replacement, so I went with no-name ni-cad replacements. If I change the "no-names" with any of a dozen single NTN4734A chargers, they cycle fine. I've charged and discharged several times and the chargers lights cooperate.
If I take the same new batteries and attempt charging in my gang chargers (I tried 3 different chargers), I just get a flashing middle (I'm color blind) light. ...put the original Mot battery in the gang and it charges fine.
The problem follows both the new batteries and the gang charger. Does anyone know if there is a fix for the gang chargers or if the fix is to only use Motorola brand batteries?? Again, the no-names charge and discharge fine in a single charger.
Thanks.
Mark

Re: Saber gang charger flashes
The middle light is yellow and flashing yellow indicates a standby condition. Mine have done this when the battery needed to
adjust to room temperature prior to rapid charge starting (safety measure) Or could be the gang charger just doesn't play well with other than OEM's.

Re: Saber gang charger flashes
I'm suspecting this is the case since the batteries have acclimated over a few days (temperature-wise).RadioSouth wrote:could be the gang charger just doesn't play well with other than OEM's.
Does anyone know if there is a mod that can be made so the gang charger accepts these batts, or... any known-good brands besides Motorola that play well with the gang?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Saber gang charger flashes
Aftermarket Saber batteries over the years have been noted for the following:
1. Quite often don't fit right in the chargers.
2. Quite often don't fit right on the radios.
3. Quite often don't measure up electronically to OEM batteries.
If you get one or more that don't exhibit these properties then you've done well.
Most Saber guys will go for the OEM product when they can afford it. The OEM
batteries are simply better in the long run and in most people's experience.

If you can get new multiplier saber batteries cheaply, then those are good. Otherwise it's hard to beat the Impres battery prices from Escomm here on the forum. I would not use any other brand....
