Spectra Bit Bang+6.15 MLM=Dead radio :(

Post by Cowboy »

T44 A9 UHF Spectra... Had 5.1x MLM in originally...

Swapped in 6.15 MLM out of known working radio (VHF D43 A5)...

Worked ok... Sort of...

Changed serials numbers to match command board...

Bit banged model number to match T44 A9 configuration... Then changed moflags to reflect Sys9000 head...

So far so good.

Backed out of Lab, in to RSS. Fixed fail 82 issue by reading then writing back to radio. Gave error indicating radio codeplug features did not match radio features.

Entered to change mode info, showed RX on UHF, TX around 333 MHz... 96 modes worth of a bad TX frequencies...

Narrowed down to 3 good, freshly programmed modes within the correct bandsplit...

Back in to Lab, changed moflag to enable zones. Backed out of Lab.

Radio power cycled and would only light up TX/BUSY LEDs on S9K head. Would not make it to Self Check...

Tried several times, same result.

Swapped back in 5.1x MLM, radio works fine.

Swapped 6.15 MLM back in to radio, no joy. Swapped to an A5 dash head, same result. Changed MLM back to 5.1x MLM with A5 dash head and A9 remote head, both work just fine...

Soooo... Guessing I've screwed this 6.15 MLM...

Correct process and/or recovery procedure for the next 6.x MLM I acquire to upgrade this radio to zones?

You must have banged the wrong bit.
Did you read this?

I swapped 2 UHF 6.15 MLMs into 2 VHF radios and had no problems.
First read and save the codeplug and alignment summary from the original MLM.
Swap them out, change the serial number, bang the bits to match your head and model number.
I also recall having to re-input the alignment values under the service/board replacement menus. Thats why you print out the alignment summary. I saved all my notes but today I'm not working anywhere near where I saved them.
Program your original codeplug back into the radio and all should be good.

There's that magical thread... No clue why I couldn't find it... Maybe because I was searching for "moflag" rather than "moflags"...

I'll work on it a bit more when I get home tonight... I'm pretty sure that 6.15 MLM is toast now :(

Just wanted to firm on this step...

Read and save in RSS then go in to Lab or do both in Lab?

Program original back into radio from Lab or RSS?

Sounds like your going about this the long way around. I hope you have saved
the original codeplug to a floppy disk. this way you can go back to it if you hose
up the codeplug.

Anyway, read the original codeplug and save it in the computer with the RSS
to the normal archive file. Change out the MLM board. Clone the original
codeplug into the new 6.15 MLM board. Let the system complain and just try
to keep going. You will have to change the serial numbers of the MLM board
to match the radio. Once you have the MLM working, then you can go and
bit bang the features. Have done this many times and even taken an 800
MHz MLM and put it into a VHF Spectra.

If you have the lab version that lets you bit bang, all the better. The RSS
should allow you to do the swap fairly easy. Don't keep going back and forth
between the different RSS programs. You don't need to do that.

So would the radio still let me clone this codeplug to the new 6.15 MLM even it putting it in to the radio won't let me get it to the SELF CHECK stage? As it stands, with the new 6.15 MLM in place, the radio will only light up dimly the BUSY & TX LEDs, won't make it anyfurther.

Or is this the indicator of a clearly dead MLM?

I haven't read through all the posts in here but did you keep track of the changes you made to the mlm as far as bitbanging? Its a good idea to in case you change one you shouldn't have changed. You can go back and change it. If you did keep track, change them back and try it.

I did track the changes, however, after modifying zones, radio would not boot with the 6.15 MLM in it. Tried multiple radios and none of them make it to boot, let alone SELF CHECK.
