XTS3000 receive audio cutting out...ht750 better!

Post by abrasowski »

I have an XTS3000 uhf sitting next to me that has issues with receiving audio?
The radio currently has a repeater programmed into it that I can get satisfactory reception from.....BUT...as it receives audio, it will cut in and out, almost like completely turning the rx audio on and off (like being completely muted one second, then full volume, then muted, and so on...)
this happens while accessing repeaters that are not a perfect signal but i can definitely make out a conversation.

NOW.... i would shrug this off as either a digital audio problem or just the repeater being too far away, BUT, yesterday i was talking simplex, car-to-car on the highway, about 50 feet away from the other car, and it started to do the cutting out audio thing. Also, as I sit here at my desk, i have an HT750 programmed with the exact same channels and it is receiving every transmission perfectly....?

Does it have to do with digital audio settings. A friend has an xts5000 configured the same exact way and doesnt have this problem, even when our radios are right next to each other.

btw, battery does not make a difference, have tried it with NI-cad, LI-ion, and NI-Mh.

I appreciate any wisdom

Not to ask an obvious question, but you don't have priority scan turned on do you?

There was a very similar question about someones audio cutting in and out a while ago. I recommended that his Priority Scan (a "Z" symbol, with a dot) was activated (because that WILL cause a "cut" in the RX ever other second). Turns out, that he DID have the Priority Scan on. If you do have this on, turn it off, and the problem should go away.

Hope that helps !

Check your receive settings on that mode, could be set for Narrow which would cut out receive audio on speech peaks.

Firmware revision: 07.05.00
DSPN: 07.03.19

...and no unfortunately I do not have priority scan on, the absense of noise when priority scan is on is definitely shorter (like milliseconds) as apposed to this problem which seems to have silent periods of about 1/2 second to 1 second, enough to make a conversation unreadable.

I will check the rx settings for narrow, but from what I remember it happens on every channel and I know some of my channels are set to wide.

Any other thoughts?
JUst want smeone to confirm, its almost definitely not due to the digital not being able to pick up a clear signal? (since I mentioned my friends xts500 will have no trouble sitting next to my 3000)

This can also be an alignment/programming issue. If your squelch is set too high, this can make the receiver do this. Make sure you have your audio settings set to and/or so that PL is the squelch gate and not the internal receiver squelch threshold.

A thorough alignment seems to be in order...

Set your squelch type to "STANDARD" and squelch down to 1.

I don't remember if it was available on the XTS3ks, but see if there is a hearclear setting in the personality field, and if there is one, make sure its unchecked (I think this was introduced in the 5k's).

Are you using the correct UHF antenna for the freq that its one? Wouldn't be the first time that an out of range antenna would cause this (more so on the VHF radios where its really obvious).

You mentioned digital modes. Is this happening in P25 and analog, or one not the other or both?

Does this happen CSQ, TPL and/or DPL?

What happens when you try it in those modes?

Do you know the history of the radio?

I've seen 3000's drift as much as 3KHz off frequency over time, which could certainly cause what you're experiencing. It could be a more complicated issue, so it's definitely worth having someone with a service monitor have a look at it.

I was experiencing the same problem as the original thread poster. I tried all of the aforementioned recommendations (dropping the squelch down, checking rx tuning, etc.) but when I read the post about having the narrowband set instead of wide, I experienced the proverbial light bulb going off.

It didn't even dawn on me to check that setting.

Thanks guys, that did the trick for me. I'm figuring one of the recommendations must have worked for the original poster.
