Johnson 5100 FPP VHF APCO 25 Programming

Post by bigtuna »

I have a Johnson 5100 VHF FPP radio and I cannot figure out how to program the unit for APCO 25 digital mode from the front panel. Is this possible? Do I need the software to do this? My model supposedly has the capability for APCO 25.
Thanks

each zone must be configured for P25 or analog, this is NOT changeable from the keypad. You have to use PCConfigure to change zone types, zone names and most other advanced radio wide parameters.

We use these in wildland firefighting, though I haven't used the portable myself (I'm partial to my XTS5000), I have worked on the mobiles (not impressed).

FPP radios differ in their ability to do different things from the front panel, though
it appears that all of them may require external/computer programming functions
to be done for one or more functions. On the Motorola and Thales units you can
select analog vs. P25 but it looks like you can't on the BKs. If given the choice I'd
prefer a unit that lets me choose between P25 and analog from the front panel.

Thanks for all the help. Yea basically I guess I will have to set up a zone for apco25. It is not that prevalent my area as of yet. You can FPP the information in the channels in the zone but you have to have the channel(s) set as APCO 25 in the software.

Does anyone know if PCC 1.28.03 will work with a Johnson 5100 Ver 1.16.9?

Everything on the BK DPH is configurable from the front panel - if you want to take the time to do it. On the DPH-CMD you can select analog vs. digital without being in programming mode and it will also automatically switch between analog & digital (mixed mode transmit) based on the last mode received within a programmable time frame. The Thales will do this as well.

That might be too old. One way to find out is to try and read the radio. Make a minor change and
save it back to the radio. I have found the software is more forgiving on reading than when you
try to write to the radio. It will give you an error message if it doesn't like it.

Have even found some radios don't like the higher data transfer rate and I have to change the setting
to only 9600 baud rate. Don't forget to change it back top the normal setting as most radios don't
like programming at that slow rate.

1.28.03 SHOULD work but it would be best to work with 1.28.08.

1.28.08 is the last general release for those old radios.
