Land Rover Disco II install

Post by wa3ra »

Any gotchas I need to be aware of? I'd like to put the 900 Mhz rig (maxtrac) on the front sunroof control panel, which means popping a hole in the roof for the whip for that band (I use comtelco spikes, nmo-mount, so maybe 6 inches of cable from the mount to the rig), but dear wife would like a dual bander, too...

I'm thinking a through-the-glass on the clerestory window in the back; it doesn't look like I can find a clean spot to drill for another NMO, plus the roof height with a decent antenna would be taller than my mobile porcupine...or would I maybe be better with a cowl-mount?

Sorry I am bringing this from the dead, but I think I may be able to help you out with this.

Where you are mounting the radio isn't bad idea, I know that Discoveries are very limited, but how about an L bracket on the spare tire, then a nice long whip. The installation for that with a CB antenna is floating somewhere on the internet, it is what Walcott CB and Firestik use for their installation instructions/kits for them, but I am sure you could easily do it with an NMO. You need to run the wire through the door through the existing grommet, which will be a pain, but it will outperform a glass mount antenna, and the only drilling will be two or three small holes to the spare tire carrier.
