HT1000 Channel Expansion Mod Harmful?

Post by CGRESQ192 »

I have a 2 Channel HT1000 on UHF that was successfully expanded to 16 channels using the mod listed on here.

Are there any disadvantges to this?

Is it better to have a "true" 16 channel radio

Any insight is appreciated!

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, XTS5000, and MTS2000

well you always risk hosing the codeplug- but then with the HT1000's it's no big issue to fix.

the real advantage to 16 channel HT1000's is the presence of the RF switch on the RF board, this makes the radio useful with public safety remote speaker mikes with antennas and the Jedi Vehicular Adapter (JVA) as it provides the needed connection with an external antenna pins on the U/C.

Since 2 channel versions of these radios were never "designed" for public safety use, they lack the switch on their RF board. (if you are good with SMD work, you could always remove the jumper, order the RF switch, and install it.)

2 channel HT1000 'mods' are simple; acquire the '16 channel' knob(no stop) and read the radio as is and then begin adding channels.
Every controller of this 'vintage' is standard, and are capable of 16 channels.

My shop has several hundred HT1K radios in the 2 channel flavor for rentals, and the controllers are the same as the 16 channel versions, so I popped a non-stop knob and added 14 channels without a hitch.

I have yet to have a single HT1000 die or become a paperweight doing such a thing, and probably never will.
They are darn near bullet proof in my opinion.

I have to find a codeplug for my VHF rebuild project also, nice new Xcvr. board and used controller and case Etc....makes for fun times!

BTW, the rebuild project is a 2 channel to 16 mod also....Smoooooth!

There is absolutely no electronic or funcuntional compromise after modding a 2 channel to a 16 channel.

I assume you're saying this can be done without the use of a hex editing program, since you didn't mention hex editing. How do you enter 14 more channels in a 2 channel ( HT1K model 1AN, 1BN, 1CN or 1DN) radio when all fields for channels above 2 are greyed out or will not take input during programming?

If there's another method aside from performing the hex edit, I'd like to know about it.

Would anyone happen to have a comparison picture of the 2ch VS 16ch knob so I would know what to look for when sorting knobs?

The underside of the knob on the 2 channel version has a 'lip' that only allows the knob to rotate two positions, and is quite apparent when compared to a 'non-lipped' knob, that has a tiny, single 'stop' underneath.

There are also two separate part numbers used as well.
