What radios do you own?: Motorola/Kenwood

Feedline recommendations

Post by fire_master_21 »

We are putting in a new station and tower. I am looking for recommendations for the feed line to the antenna. We are on VHF at 150.xxx, the tower is about 60 ft tall and I have about 50 ft to run form the tower to the office where the radio will be. At this time there will be no repeater on this line just a base station radio. However the possibility to have a repeater at this station is very real. What do you think I should run this with?

Heliax... 1/2" LDF4-50A should be sufficient. You'll see about 0.85dB loss per 100' at 150MHz, so just a hair under 1dB for your run. I would recommend a decent antenna (DB-224/264 or equivalent), especially if you're talking about repeater service.

1/2 inch "heliax" type cable is a good choice. Just make sure you weather seal
the connectors well. A layer of good electrical tape like Scotch 33 first will
allow you to re-open the connector at a later date. Otherwise any weather seal
you use will fuse itself to the connector and make it all but impossible to get
the connector apart down the road. This comes from some 40 plus years of
installing all sorts of coax connectors.
