ASTRO SABER & XTS 3000 CUSTOMER PROGRAMMING SOFTWARE R05.03.00
===============================================================
- VISTA (32-bit) with Service Pack 1 is now a supported operating system!
(see 'For VISTA Users' section below)
- Tutorials format has changed. Previous versions of the Tutorials
will NOT work with this version of the CPS. It is recommended to
install the tutorials with this CPS version
- If both portable and mobile CPS's are used, it is recommended to update
both at the same time, and tutorials should be installed with BOTH versions.
New CPS Features Supported:
===========================
- This version includes following enhancements to the Advanced System Key:
(1) version Control
(2) Same Master Key for REDI/ASTRO/Patriarch CPS.
(3) New Access Level "Unlimited Access without Write Protection".
This would give Unlimited access in the CPS.
(4) Password Protection
- Import functionality at node level
For VISTA Users:
================
The following configuration on Vista Home Premium and Business Premium
needs to be set for the CPS to function properly:
1. Vista Theme should be set to Windows Classic. Codeplug archive names should not
exceed 30 characters.
2. A Vista compatible printer is required for using the Print functionality in the CPS.
3. User Access Control should be turned OFF before using CPS.
Tutorials Update:
==================
Due to the newly added support for Vista, the tutorials and help engine
have been updated to a new format. Required modifications to the new help
format require Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 or above. Microsoft
shipped Internet Explorer version 6 in 2001. Thirteen of the online help
tutorial files have been converted from an AVI format (.avi) to the Adobe Flash (.swf) format. The .avi to .swf conversion saves over 120 megabytes of
harddrive space. All tutorial lessons are now in the Flash format. These
tutorial lessons require Flash Player version 6 or above to be installed.
Flash version 6 was shipped in 2002. Currently there are approximately 15
tutorial lessons requiring about 31 megabytes of harddrive space. The
tutorials are always installed in a 揬Tutorials?subfolder for each of the
CPS applications. It is strongly recommended to install the tutorials with
this new version of the CPS. Previous tutorial versions are not recognized
by R05.03.00 CPS.
Note: Double-clicking a link within the help text might generate a error
message.
System Requirements:

Note: XP upgrade or Vista upgrade from other operating
systems is not supported if the CPS was previously
installed on the old operating system.
Windows ME and Windows 98 are no longer supported.
You may choose to proceed with the installation, but
some features might not be functioning properly.
Upgrading the operating system is highly recommended.
Hardware Requirements:

systems except for Vista. Vista minimum
requirement is 1 GB of System memory
Hard Disk Space 1 Gigabyte Drive with 450 MB minimum free space (for a
Typical Installation, including Help Audio-Visual
Tutorials) or 60 MB minimum free space (for a Compact
Installation)
40 GB hard drive for Vista
Peripherals Microsoft Windows supported Mouse or Trackball
Microsoft Windows supported Serial Port
for radio communication
Microsoft Windows supported Printer Port
for report printing
CD-ROM for software installation
NOTE: For computers that are not equipped with
a serial port, radio communications may be
possible with the use of an off-the-shelf
USB to RS232 converter, such as the IOGEAR
USB to Serial/PDA Converter Cable.
Known Issues:
-------------
1) Drop down items in table fields cannot be accessed when using Windows XP
Professional "Windows XP Style" display. If this issue is encountered,
change the display setting to "Windows Classic Style" for proper
functionality.
2) Attempting to Read from or Write to a radio with the CPS while the Tuner
is open will cause a communication failure.
3) When any of the Emergency fields becomes invalid, attempting to save this
file might cause the CPS to terminate abnormally.
4) Depending on your computer configuration, "USB" may be listed in the Port
Configuration drop-down when you attempt to read a radio. USB communication
is not supported by ASTRO radios. You must select a valid Serial
Communication Port to read from and write to your ASTRO radio.
5) CBI Programming may fail intermittently, especially on Dell PCs. On machines
where this is an issue, multiple retries might be required. Changing the port
settings as follows may help:
On Windows 2000:
1. Right click 'My computer' and select 'Manage' from context
menu.
2. Select 'Device Manager' on the tree in the left pane.
3. Expand the node 'Ports' on the tree in the right pane.
4. Double click the port that is being used
5. Go to 'Port Settings' Tab
6. Click 'Advanced'
7. Uncheck 'Use FIFO buffers' check box.
8. Click 'OK'
On Windows NT 4.0:
1. Double click 'Ports' icon in control panel.
2. Select the port that is being used and click Settings.
3. Click 'Advanced'
4. Uncheck 'FIFO Enabled' check box.
5. Click 'OK'
6) If the user has two CPS applications open, and has opened Help in one of them,
an error will sometimes appear if the user attempts to open Help in the other
CPS application. If this situation occurs frequently, the user can copy both
.chm files (AstroMob.chm for the ASTRO Spectra CPS and AstroPort.chm for the
ASTRO Saber & XTS3000 CPS) from the installed location (usually C:\Program
Files\Motorola\<Application Name>) to the Windows\System folder (for XP) or
the Winnt\System32 folder (for NT, 2000). Help can then be
run from both CPS applications at the same time.
7) For particular computer configurations, the radio display may flash "FL01/90"
after communicating with the CPS. This especially happens with Dell Latitude
or HP Omnibook laptops running Windows 2000,after performing a read, write, or
clone operation. The CPS operation has been successful, but the serial port on
the computer has not released the communications line. A quick workaround is to
simply disconnect the radio from the computer for a few seconds. This will
allow the radio to reset itself and return to a normal operating mode.
The fix for this issue is extensive, but may be obtained by contacting the
Motorola Customer Support at 888-567-7347.

create archive (.cpg) files with the CPS (Customer Programming Software)
is not available on the French version of the Windows Operating Systems.
Therefore, there is no way to save archive files when the CPS is
installed on the French version of Windows. Until import laws are
changed such that Microsoft can provide encryption support, this feature
can not be addressed.
9) If you attempt to close a dialog box by pressing the 'X' in the upper right
of the dialog while the application is still busy (the cursor is shaped like
an hourglass), the application may terminate.
10) When modifying/updating Frequency Picklist, the Conventional Personality,
Trunking Personality and Trunking System dialogs must be closed for them
to get properly updated. Failing to do so may cause unpredictable results.
11) Please note that when uninstalling a previous version of the CPS (R04.00.00),
customizable user settings such as Frequency Picklist, Selected color to notify
invalid fields and uncheck Tip of the day on start up, will be reset to default.
This is an issue with the R04.00.00 uninstall program.
12) Currently, the product does not support 700 MHz frequency. Please ignore 700 MHz
frequency information in tag name and help contents.
13) Feature limitation: Only use iButton by parallel port or USB port at one time.
It's not supported to use iButtons both by parallel port and USB port.
14) Feature limitation: It's recommended to close Advanced System Key Administrator
when loading Advanced System Key to CPS.
15) When upgrading radio by FLASHport,if one error message box is popped out
during upgrading, Menu Item: Tools->FLASHport->Upgrade Radio will be grayed
after press Enter key of Keyboard to close the upgrading window.
We have two recommendation methods to avoid this issue:
(1) Use mouse instead of press Enter Key of Keyboard to close the upgrading
window.
(2) Close and reopen CPS if this situation happens.
Installation:
-------------
1) It is no longer required that the previous version of the application be
uninstalled before installing this release provided that the previous version
is R04.01.04 or later. Note that this does not allow multiple versions to be
installed, rather the already installed application will be upgraded.
2) When you insert the Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive, the installation
will start automatically. You may select to install the CPS or the Tuner or
both applications. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
3) Before uninstalling the CPS, disable the CPS Password if you have enabled
this feature, and close the CPS Launcher if it is running in the system
tray.
4) If a file installed by the CPS later becomes corrupted, the Repair
option on the Installation CD may be used to restore it. It is very
important that the Installation CD for the same version that is
installed on the computer is used for Repair. Use of a different
version in an attempt to Repair an installation will result in further
corruption.
5) Windows NT Installation: If the Install does not find the shlwapi.dll in
*\WINNT\System32 directory, you will need to install Internet
Explorer 4.1 or above to facilitate the XML installation, which is required
for the FLASHport feature of the CPS.
6) If the PC has never had a 1-Wire USB device connected to it before, such
as the USB dongle used for FLASHkeys or Advanced keys, then plug it in right
after installation to complete the USB install. If it is not recognized or if
auto-detect can not locate the USB device driver, then point the New Hardware
Wizard's Driver installer to it in the install drive, such as
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers".
The wizard should then find and install the driver automatically.
7) If some tutorial files can not be played, you will need to install Adobe Flash
Player 6.0 or above to facilitate the tutorial files.
Programming Hints:
------------------
1) You can use your DOS archive files in the ASTRO CPS without the need for
any conversion process. There is no CPS Archive Converter; you simply
read your DOS archives directly into the CPS. To open a DOS codeplug in
the ASTRO CPS, select File->Open from the Menu, and change the setting
in the "Files of type" drop-down to "All Files (*.*)". You will then be
able to select any DOS archive and click the "Open" button. When you are
ready to save the archive, select File->Save As from the Menu, and save
your archive as a .cpg (Windows archive) file. The DOS RSS cannot read
archive files saved with this or later versions of Windows CPS.
2) If your DOS archive ends in an extension that Windows recognizes as a
particular file type (*.xls, which Windows recognizes as an Excel file, for
example), you may need to enter the .cpg extension in the Save As dialog.
3) The first time you start the CPS, you should go to the User Settings
Dialog under the Tools menu and set up the directories where you will store
your system keys.
4) To get help on a field, press F1 or 'right click' and select 'What's this?'
while you are on the field, or click on the Help button on the tool bar (an
arrow with a question mark) and then click on the field for which you want
to view help.
5) For more information on the features available in the Windows CPS, we
suggest you view our audio-visual help tutorials. They can be accessed from
the CPS menu by selecting Help->CPS Help Topics, and then double-clicking
on CPS Tutorials, then The Tutorials Menu. Then select the tutorial you
wish to view.
