FL 01/90 MCS2000...Should I buy it

Post by rcfire76 »

Guys,

I got a lead on a remote mount Model II MCS2000 it is complete with everything and I can buy it for $125.

I think this is a case where there are a bunch of radios with a bunch of heads, so no one knows if this head "belongs" to this radio. In testing the seller states that the radio powers up but shows a FL 01/90.

I looked on Batlabs, and that code goes to a hardware error, and there is also talk of a broken regulator on the main board.

My questions are, is it worth $125 for the complete radio, Is it still supported so that it could be depoted if needed... Any further Ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks
T

IIRC there is a regulator that heats up and comes loose and will show that error.

IMHO, it's a non-working $25 (NOT $125) radio...

it's analog
it's obsolete
it's on the verge of being no longer supported at the depot

don't waste your time, spend your $ on something that works.

I'd see if he'll take $100 for it and then take a whack at it.

Everything *eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverything* in that radio is surface mount, so if you get in there with a fine tipped soldering iron, you'd be surprised what you can fix. As someone stated previously, the regulator can heat up and unsolder itself, as can the surface mount header that the control head plugs into.

If nothing else, you could isolate the problem and sell the working items (mic, speaker, control cable, control head, whatever) on the 'Bay and at least recover a portion of your initial outlay.

It'd be worth $100 to me to fix it. But I'm sure other people would rather it get thrown out so they can dig it out of the trash, fix it, whoreflash it and then sell it here on the board. I think I'll stop there.
