MTS2000 **WEIRD** BEEP

Post by MFR465 »

OK, so I'm going to attempt to describe this as best I can.

A few months back I bought a Motorola MTS2000 from a buddy of mine who had it fully loaded with all of Middlesex County, NJ's trunked systems on UHF (450-527). Ever since I reprogrammed it to all conventional channels, it makes an intermittent beep (same sound as if I was to press my DTMF keys without actually keying up... it just makes a dud type beep). There is no specific time when it makes this sound, no pattern, no nothing... happens whether I am scanning or not... doesn't matter what channel I'm on or what zone I'm in. The only time it won't make this sound is if it's off or I'm transmitting.

The only thing I can think of is a) I didn't realize I'm scanning for a talkgroup that is not programmed (which I don't think is the case because I've already gone over the codeplug numerous times looking for that) and I'm getting an out of range alert OR b) the cable(s) is/are pinched within the housing of the radio itself (which I really can't see being the issue because the radio has NEVER been opened up).

Does anyone have any sort of input??? This is driving me nuts!

Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like one of the buttons is stuck. Check the programming for the top button (orange, emergency, whatever) and see if it's set to something that would make the bonk noise. If it's not the top button, it's almost definitely another one somewhere on the unit. Try muting all of the alert tones if you gave yourself that option in the menu. If it still happens after muting all of the alerts, I don't know what to tell you.

If you've determined it's a stuck button, put the thing into service mode and see which button is hitting itself. You'll know which one it is because its numeric ID will show up each time it happens, and you can watch it switch from a 0 to a 1 and back. To determine which button is identified by the ID you see, either press each button until the same ID comes back to you, or put another MTS in service mode and and press each one until you see the same ID code. Oh yeah, the button and switch IDs are also listed in their entirety in the service manual if you happen to have access to it.

Perhaps it's the channel announcement tone he's hearing...

Active channel gets the beep.

I read where you say the bonk doesn't occur when you are transmitting, is that only during the transmission, or does it occur when you initially key the radio?

I have multiple scan lists. If I'm scanning and switch to another zone, I'll get the bonk the first time I key the radio in the new zone. The radio has come out of scan mode. I can hit the home key, change a channel, turn scan off/on and scan is functional again.

If you set the radio on a counter top, nothing touching it, will it just bonk occasionally?

Yes... there is no rhyme or reason to when it occurs. Outside of it not happening when I'm transmitting...
