I am with the fire department andI have an xts3000r. It connects to my scba mask and unless I have the mask on my face, I can't hear radio transmissions. I am wondering if there is a way to get both my mask speaker and the prep speaker to work at the same time. I have several connectors I can experiment with, but need to know if I can jump or emit connectors to allow the internal speaker to remain on when the accessory plug is connected to the radio.
Thanks for any help. I am new to the forum and hope I don't sound "too new".

No problem with anyone sounding "too new" because we all were at one time or another. However, we would have a problem with helping you to personally modify your life safety gear on your own without proper supervision and assistance from your departmental tech guys. Most of what you'll read about on this board concerns non-critical radio work, but what you're asking about comes under a much more serious heading. Between your air pack people and radio people there is probably some approved way to do what you want to do, but doing it by cut and try on your own is definitely not a good idea.

Hey Brian, I just have to ask.... What do you use for a radio when you're not masked up, like for investigating, overhaul, and the other many situations on the fireground when you don't need to be masked up? I guess i'm just questioning a system that renders the portable useless in any other situation besides being masked up...

Re: xts3000r internal speaker
We unclip the mask from the radio for other department functions, but it is cumbersome to clip the radio in after my mask is on with gloves donned. I have exhausted the tecnical avenues of the manufacturer and the retrofit Motorola setup. At this point, all of us have removed the communications from our masks because of bent pins on the Motorola connectors. They bounce around in a mask bag and get bent up. We have enough extra radios to keep one in my turnout gear with the clip already connected to it. The problem is that the clip renders the speaker on my radio innoperative, even without the mask plugged into it. I figured there must be a pin that interrupts the radio's speaker when the clip is installed. I have a strong background in electronics and was hoping for a simple solution to the problem. If it is too invasive, I will suffer with what I have.
Thanks for the responses.

Unfortunately, I think you're stuck on this one. Every audio accessory I have seen mutes the internal speaker when attached. You don't get audio out of the radio speaker when a lapel mic or earphone is connected, so how would this accessory act any different? Without digging out the old schematic, I think its safe to say that a load connected to the accessory connector is always going to mute the native speaker.
