GM300 display gone crazy!

Post by snubber »

The display on my 16 channel GM300 does not display the correct channel # or scan mode in most cases, it will stick on one channel or go out all together. Other times it works normally. Even when the display is not working properly the radio still functions and scans. Any ideas?

First thing to do is look at the display board and see if there's any corrosion on it, often some spillage will get in there, especially around the display driver chip underneath the display.
If that looks good, try reseating the control head connectors.

Thanks for the tip jack, the problem turned out to be a bad spot in the ribbon cable for the remote head.

I would've said that, but you failed to mention it had a remote head, and I wasn't wearing my Kreskin hat that day.

I recently picked up a 16-ch GM300 from a dealer on eBay. Within an hour the display suddenly went crazy, showing random patterns of number, User & Scan segments. The radio still received fine. Turning it off & then back on initially had no effect on the problem. Repeating this cleared the problem. I ran it overnight with no repeat of the problem. Of course, back at the dealer they could no reproduce the fault. I am now waiting for a replacement.

Has anyone experienced anything similar & can they offer any insight into its cause & fix?

Thanks!
