SYNTOR X 9000 VHF DISTORTED AUDIO

I recently aquired a Syntor X 9000 VHF, securenet capable. I disconnected the secure net cable that was attched to the main power harness. I can program the radio and control head, but the RECEIVE AUDIO is distorted. I have not transmitted on the radio.

I have changed speakers, audio still distorted.

The radio is programmed from 2 meters to public safety (receive only). It has 128 modes, both control head and radio.

My thoughts are it could be because of the secure net radio, a menu change, low voltage, or maybe I am in the WRONG SEGMENT OF THE BAND SELECTIONS (146 to 174, vice 150-174).

Any ideas???

Sounds to me like the radio is off-frequency. I'd suggest a full alignment.

I have seen several 9000's with VCO's that had "hair" (for a lack of a better term) growing in them. This will cause all sorts of problems including distorted/scratchy audio, and freq errors. If you open the VCO and it has this problem you will see what I am talking about. Just clean it out good with compressed air.

Yes, a tin whisker or whiskers.

Other problem can be a unbalanced audio amplifier or even a bad transistor in the amplifier. Similar to the Micor audio amp.

Check the jumper placement on the microprocessor board. There is a jumper change to switch between secure and non secure versions.

Make sure that the audio IC is correctly fastened down, as well as the rest of that circuit board, I don't have one in front of me to tell you which is which, but since the chassis floats, some of the screw connection points are insulated.

If that checks OK, replace the audio IC. Spectras have the same problem.
