XTS3000 Housing Question
let me start by saying I have searched high and low here, on RR, and on google for an answer to this to no avail. so here it goes. I have a XTS3000 model 2 and i want to recase it. I have a Moto online account but the refurb kit is $418. WOW!!! and i can not buy it in pieces because they will not sell me the name plates. I can get the housing, but no stickers. WTF!! and Panter88 does not have one. SO..... I was wondering if i buy a model 3 case (because the 3's are everywhere) and the keypad and keyboard and put it on will it work? i don't want to mess with any of the S-Rec stuff and if the numbers part don't work that would be fine. I just want to be sure that the home and navigational buttons would work. Has anyone ever done this? please your help would be appreciated.

Here's akardam's guide on Model I to Model III conversion from the hardware side. It looks like you're already halfway there starting with an MII.

I have seen the guide, like i said, I have searched high and low and that guide came up. I know how to do the hardware portion of the switch. at the bottom of the guide he also states that he will not discuss the software side of it. obviously to go from a model 1 to a 3 you would have to force an s-rec to enable the keypad since a model 1 does not have one. what i want to know is if i go from model 2 to 3 without the S-rec, will the keypad work since the codeplug already has a keypad enabled. or would it only partially work?

Re: XTS3000 Housing Question
I'd be willing to bet that the "Hot Keypad" selection box in your present CPS setup for the XTS model 2 has sunglasses on it, meaning that the selection is invalid. That being the case means that you'd have to put an s-rec from a model 3 into the radio to make the keypad work.

Re: XTS3000 Housing Question
if the numbers on it do not work i am ok with that.
let me give an example, I have an ht1250 that was a lmtd keypad. I put on the full housing and flipped the switch in CPS to make it full keypad . If i had not flipped that switch in CPS, the regular buttons that are already on a lmtd key would still work just not the numbers.
I would assume this is the same with the XTS, BUT, the only difference is on the ht1250 the keyboard that comes with it does both the lmtd and full. in the XTS i will have to buy a whole new board. This is what concerns me, i am wondering if the two boards have different drivers that the only the appropriate model would have.
thus, swapping them would leave the keyboard completely inoperable instead of just partially inoperable.

Re: XTS3000 Housing Question
It SHOULD work, IIRC the function keys are mapped the same.

Re: XTS3000 Housing Question
The easy answer is that a 1250 is not an XTS. I once owned two Vertex VX900 radios, VHF and UHF, and I wanted to add the keypad to both of them. All it took was swapping the case, because underneath was a fully operative, illuminated(!) keyswitch board just waiting for buttons to be installed. Different manufacturers work in very different ways, and the fact is with Motorola you must change the shield on many of their radios to upgrade to full keypad operation. We used to to do it on the original Sabers and now we have to do it on the XTS units. The keypad shield does have different drivers, so to speak, and these are part of the s-rec when you put the new s-rec into the radio that you're upgrading.

Re: XTS3000 Housing Question
I want to share the outcome of this question. in the end i put a m3 keypad on a m2 without changing any s-rec info and this is what i got.
as I suspected the keypad was recognized and the top six buttons worked just as they do on a m2. the only thing that did not work were the numbers, they would have worked also IF i put a m3 s-rec in.
I think that some here were misunderstanding the original question thinking i neede to know how to go from m2 to m3, when in actuality i just wanted to know what happens when an m3 keypad is put on a m2 with no codeplug change, for the reasons stated in the original post.
