Volume Problem on CDM1250

Post by hatzq68 »

I have a 45 Watt VHF CDM1250 that I bought used a few months ago. For some reason, the volume on it is a little wacky. When I turn the knob to the high volume, it doesn't always make the volume high. Sometimes I have to almost jiggle the knob for it to work right. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it. I hope I am being clear in my explanation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It likely just needs a new volume control. You could try spraying some contact cleaner into it (disassemble the control head and spray directly into the volume control) and turn the control back & forth through it's full range many times. Then resolder it & see what happens.

I am having the exact same issue with my cdm1250. I have to turn the knob all the way up to max and it will then jump to MAX volume and then i can back it off, this is the only way i can adjust the volume on this radio.

If i need a new pot, which i suspect is the case, does anyone know where to get it and how to install?

They are a bit of a pain to desolder. Make sure you have a good solder sucker and some patience.

What radios do you own?: CDM1250s, CP200, RDXs, DTR550

Yep. Sounds exactly like a volume pot going bad. I had it go bad on my cdm1250 as well as on two ht750's (apparently this seems to be one of the most common problems with the pro series). Symptoms include low audio, very loud audio, no response from volume knob, intermittent volume, etc.
You might have better luck finding a replacement head on ebay for the 1250 instead of having to re-solder a new volume knob on. I've never done it myself. Most radios shops are familiar with this problem though.
