I believe your radio will do everything a MTS will do except the MTS has the slot for the encryption board while the MTX doesn't. Since your radio is UHF, the whole rebanding & MTS vs MTX thing doesn't matter. What extra features are you looking for? GARY N4KVE

this mtx838 has limited mdc1200 features, i cant select call or page ... no page or call in the menu items selection al these features wich are in the mts2000 are missing in this .. its liek a cheap nasty cut down half baked version of a mts ! i can only send out if i have it as a pre tx ani. ancient firmware maybe....
i dont know but its rendering this radio a bit of a dud :)
cheers

Believe they have a limited capacity controller similar to the MTX8000/9000 radios. Basically a watered down MTS2000 that wasn't sold much in the US but had a large Canadian market. Don't think it has the memory capacity to be blown into a MTS.
99 Channel limit on yours ?

Basically your biggest problem with that radio is the firmware.. The MTX firmware never made it above R02.00, and was commonly around R01.37 or in that neighborhood.. The MTX controller will handle a full blown MTS2000 plug with 250 channels force fed in, but the low MTX firmware will not know what to do with most of the options, especially most of the signalling options. So everything will show up in the RSS menus, but whether or not everything works is another story..

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

If and that's a big IF that radio was lucky enough to get the 6147 controller put into it you should be able to get most of those features. I don't see why an MTX838 can't be turned into a MTS2k AN model. However one much be careful with the MTS stuff cause (unless they finally fixed it) the windows software does NOT like the lower end firmwares. Including those in true AN model MTS2000s. The last firmware versions for AN MTS's and 6147 MTX's is 1.53 and the last version put out for the MTX radios (can't remember those boards off the top of my head) were 1.52 be careful one is top display and one is front display.

So if you have 1.52 I don't see why you could not get all the features of an AN MTS2000 to work. Again, make sure you don't every try to read it with the windows version or it'll get an 01/82 error and require you to use your DOS software to try and fix it.
